FUBAR is an American series about the CIA’s fiery spy duo of the father Luke (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and daughter Emma (Monica Barbaro). Their professions as secretive undercover agents have severely damaged their personal as well as professional lives.
This FUBAR (fouled up beyond all recognition) word is derived from the “furchtbar” (means awful) – a German word. This military terminology was commonly used during World War II to describe a mission that had been severely messed up or an event that was complete chaos. So, the title of this show seems apt, as both the leading spies – the father and the daughter are almost always at loggerhead, even during their spy missions.
{It is Arnold Schwarzenegger's first main role in his maiden series}

Spoilers free review of the FUBAR (S1/2023) series
The spy duo of Father and Daughter are fluffed beyond any recognition in this show. Although this serial marks the entry of veteran action star Arnold Schwarzenegger into the world of series, I believe, its creator should have chosen a much tighter and funnier script for the Schwarzenegger. While watching it, I felt that the comedic scenes often failed to deliver the knockout punch.
Besides, in the action scenes, Arnold delivers, however, one should take into consideration that he is well past his prime. For me, it is more of a story about the spies and their flawed family lives, rather than the action-adventure-thriller. I just wished it to be a much funnier and action-filled show. Hopefully, its creator will do so in its second season, in case that is in the future pipeline.
When I saw actors – Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Arnold in this thrilling series, it reminded me of their “True Lies” (1994) movie, which falls in the same genre and almost has a familiar storyline. In the context of this action-comedy serial, the FUBAR slang stands for “fucked up beyond all recognition” and/or “fucked up beyond all repair” in popular parlance of the present day and age.
We think this action-packed spy drama series is a complete time pass and binge-worthy.
Rating of this 2023 American Spy series
FM’s rating | 3.35/5 |
FM’s short comments | This series banks too heavily on the star power of global action megastar Arnold Schwarzenegger, however, it falls short of high expectations because of its predictable plotline. Still, Arnold’s old charm makes it a good time series to watch. |
