Justified: City Primeval ~ Is A Good Drama?

Justified: City Primeval Featured Image

The Justified: City Primeval (2023) series brings the protagonist, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), back. Both Raylan and this crime drama seemed to be ageing like fine wine. In the original Justified (2010-2015) show, the lead actor, Timothy Olyphant, was portraying a much younger and brazen crime fighter.

Notably, the latest 2023 show is based on Elmore Leonard’s novel “City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit”. So, it picks the story of fictional U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens fighting crime in a new town in the U.S.A. It is linked with the original Justified series, which is based on the “Fire in the Hole” novel by Elmore Leonard.

Spoiler-Free Review of the Justified: City Primeval (2023) Series

The synopsis
Having left the hollers of Kentucky 15 years ago, Raylan Givens now lives in Miami, a walking anachronism balancing his life as a U.S. Marshal and part-time father of a 15-year-old girl. A chance encounter on a desolate Florida highway sends him to Detroit. There he crosses paths with Clement Mansell, aka The Oklahoma Wildman, who's already slipped through the fingers of Detroit's finest once.

Important Note
Young actor Vivian Olyphant (Willa Givens) plays the daughter of Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) in this series. She is Timothy Olyphant's daughter in a real-life, and she makes her acting debut in this show.
Welcoming back Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens

After almost a gap of eight long years, we get to see the tough-as-nails hero U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) in another version of the Justified series. One of the good things about the Justified series is that it has some of the most hated and menacing villainous characters.

The lone wolves who stop at nothing while killing their prey.

Boyd Holbrook plays villain Clement Mansell charmingly

Undoubtedly, the villain Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook) is evil deliciously and provocatively. His good looks and charming ways, notwithstanding. Some of his villainous acts are cruel and heinous. Yet he continues to get away with the killings of many people.

Maybe the local police ways are not up to the mark while catching up with smart criminals like him.

We liked Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as Carolyn Wilder, too

Also, there is a smart attorney Carolyn Wilder (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor), who leaves no stone unturned to keep her criminal clients from the clutches of law. She even forces Raylan to the backfoot and into a holding cell.

The conclusion

The latest playfield is where Raylan hunts for criminals like Clement. Then there is an issue of all-pervading corruption in the city of Detroit, neatly noted down and chronicled in a dangerous diary. With a tight script, its ensemble cast led by Timothy, Boyd and Aunjaune has done a good job. It is a fascinating tale of good versus evil with lots of grey stuff, narrated in the usual cowboy struts. We think it is a good crime show for Timothy Olyphant fans, especially those who liked him in the original Justified series.

U.S. Deputy Marshall Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant)

The hero protagonist of this series is U.S. Deputy Marshall Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), who is a typical cowboy hat-wearing lawman, who believes in upholding the law. He is well-known for his own, Wild West-style methods of upholding justice. His no-nonsense approach along with his old-world charming swagger with a gun quite often puts him at odds with the most dreaded criminals that he comes across in the violent confrontations.

Defence attorney Carolyn Wilder (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor)

Then there is a street-smart and pragmatic defence attorney Carolyn Wilder (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor), who has no qualms about representing the dangerous criminals in the courts of law.

Violent villain Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook)

The main villain – the antagonist is a violent person with antisocial personality disorder Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook). He commits the most horrific of crimes. Although he exudes loads of charms, he is nasty and deadly.

Teenage daughter Willa Givens (Vivian Olyphant)

Lastly, let us not forget the teenage daughter Willa Givens (Vivian Olyphant) of Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) in it. She seeks time and attention from her father, who has remained absent from her life.

In short, when the worlds of these four key characters collide in the city of Detroit, the chaos and mayhem along with the love and caring happens.

What happens to the key characters – their fate in this American crime drama series?
The fate of the above-mentioned characters

After killing many people, the unpredictable and impulsive killer Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook) finally met his match in Raylan Givens.

In the end, Raylan pulled the trigger to end the life of Clement.

The combative defence attorney Carolyn Wilder (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) got the chance to make an impact in society, as she was promoted to the position of Judge in the court.

Well, Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) decided to retire from the hectic U.S. Marshall services, so that he could spend more quality time with his teenage daughter Willa Givens (Vivian Olyphant).

But, it seems that Raylan’s retirement plans will not last for too long.

Its cliff-hanger ending is explained. And what about season two of this series?
What could be the plot of season two?

One of the key antagonists and the villainous character named Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) from the original Justified (2010-2015) series escapes from prison along with his prison guard friend. And given his past enmity with the protagonist and the U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), we might see their paths cross again. And in that case, their showdown might happen in the future.

However, it is worth noting that the Justified: City Primeval (2023) Series was conceived as a miniseries originally, and so far, no sequel has been announced by its makers.
