Pasutri Gaje (2024) movie is a comedy-drama that focuses on the chaotic life of a newly married couple. It is the first Indonesian movie that we have seen, and we liked this usual South East Asian film. Incidentally, while watching it we noted a common Asian thread.
Interestingly, we found quite a few similarities between the societies of Indonesia and South Asian nations. It is worth noting that the “Pasutri Gaje” movie is inspired by a line webtoon by Annisa Nisfihani. The title loosely means “Funny Couple” and/or “Strange Couple”.
We have read that the movie is unable to do complete justice to the line webtoon. Still, we think, it is a good time-pass movie.

The synopsis/summary
Newlyweds Adimas (Reza Rahadian) and Adelia (Bunga Citra Lestari) have recently settled into their new residence. In light of their new house mortgage obligations, Adimas requested that Adelia delay starting a family. However, they are facing significant pressure from both their workplace and their home environment. When Adelia mentioned that her menstruation was two weeks overdue, Adimas prematurely declared to everyone that she was expecting. This announcement quickly elevated Adimas to the status of the family’s beloved son-in-law.
Meanwhile, Adelia experienced feelings of guilt for the deception. She urged Adimas to clarify that she was not, in fact, pregnant. Nevertheless, Adimas hesitated to do so, fearing the shame and mockery that might arise from those who questioned his ability to conceive with Adelia and the potential loss of his favoured son-in-law position. In short, this light-hearted film depicts a newly married pair – Adimas and Adelia. And the kind of pressure that a newly married couple faces from their family and the society at large in South Asia.
This (Indo) Asian movie is realistic and relatable
Adimas and Adelia have tied the knot! Nevertheless, who suggests that marriage is a straightforward journey? As they navigate the intricacies of their marital relationship, facing both the joys and difficulties of married life as they embark on the journey of starting a family. The daily lives of a husband and wife working as civil servants can be quite complex. Especially, when they live in a typical Asian society in a lovely small town. More so, when they are always surrounded by their family members, friends and office colleagues. Almost all of them start expecting an early ‘pregnancy’ and ‘baby’ right after the marriage. And they are quite upfront about their expectations.
No doubt, the story of this family entertainment movie is both realistic and relatable. While watching this movie, we found quite a few cultural similarities between India and Indonesia. It seems that both the family and society of the two nations share many similarities.
So, what similarities are we talking about?
One of them is, of course, the strong desire to become grandparents that exists among the parents of both the bride and groom. Even, relatives and friends have similar expectations of the newlyweds. All of these are so quintessential Asian social and cultural things. Then, there are other examples too. For instance, the Belimbur Ceremony of Indonesia is depicted in this movie. And fascinatingly, ‘Belimbur’ bears quite a few similarities to the famous ‘Holi’ festival of India. Also, there are other similarities, so go ahead and find them out.
Belimbur is a tradition of pouring water on fellow members of the community which is part of the closing ritual of the Erau Festival. This tradition is a form of public gratitude for the smooth implementation of Erau. In addition, Belimbur has a philosophical purpose as a means of cleansing oneself from bad qualities and elements of evil. Water, which is the source of life, is believed to be a medium to dissolve human bad qualities. (Information Source: Hello Indonesia)
What did we like about it?
Besides the simple and family-friendly tale, we liked the smart use of animations in the film. In a way, the plain and natural storyline reminds us of the Hindi movies of the 1960s and 1970s from India. The lead pair of Reza Rahadian (Adimas) and Bunga Citra Lestari (Adelia) have been easy to watch. The hero Adimas (Reza Rahadian) takes part in different activities to impress and win over his father-in-law. On the other hand, the heroine Adelia (Bunga Citra Lestari) tries almost all kinds of tricks to get pregnant. Growing up in a small town, we could identify with the behaviour of the family members, friends, neighbours, local shopkeepers and colleagues.
The conclusion
A bunch of the situation comedy scenes in the film are quite hilarious. On the flip side, some of the jokes failed. Despite its shortcomings, we do not doubt that youngsters, couples and others may like it. Frankly, we enjoyed watching our first Indonesian movie, Pasutri Gaje.
