The synopsis/summary

Taking place in the early 1990s in Lonpur, Bengal, the “Shekhar Home” series artfully blends suspense with humour. Shekhar Home (Kay Kay Menon) meets Dr Jayvrat Sahni (Ranvir Shorey), who becomes his housemate due to a twist of fate. In this six-part show, the duo – the unconventional Shekhar Home and his recent housemate Jayavrat Sahni work together to unravel various mysteries across Eastern India, all while interacting with a colourful cast of characters in a charming, technology-free pre-digital age.

We loved this Indian adaptation of the famous Sherlock Holmes stories

It is not very often, we come across a fairly good adaptation of the Western tales in the Indian milieu. But, this is exactly what the “Shekhar Home” series has pulled off recently. They have taken famous characters from the British novels of Sherlock Holmes, then given them their Indian names and relocated them to Bengal, Bihar and other states of East India.

Also, an overwhelming sense of nostalgia gripped us, when this series took us back into the 1993 year. In those pre-tech. era, life seemed to be so much simple and uncomplicated. But even in those days, criminals and their crimes have always been an integral part and parcel of our society. This is where one understands the importance of a brilliant detective. His intelligent mind is always a few steps ahead of the cunning crooks. In short, we honestly admit that we loved this Indian adaptation of the famous Sherlock Holmes stories.

All the ensemble cast members played their roles perfectly

After they did fascinating work with its script-writing, they needed a talented group of actors and actresses to bring alive the captivating detective tale on the screen. Like its source materials, this series also has quite a few twists and turns. And, no we shall not discuss the surprise elements.

The enigmatic Kay Kay Menon (Shekhar Home/Sherlock Holmes) played the protagonist. He superbly portrayed the bright and gifted detective Shekhar with a lot of panache. In solving the mysteries behind the crimes, Kay Kay is assisted by Ranvir Shorey (Dr Jayvrat Sahni/Doctor John Watson), who portrays the supporting role admirably.

And, as always Rasika Dugal (Iraboty/Irene Adler) was magical in her role. Not only did she look beautiful but she also charmed her way into the hero’s (and viewers’) heart. We also liked the short but cool performances of Shernaz Patel (Mrs Henriques/Mrs H), Kaushik Sen (Mrinmoy/Mycroft Holmes), Kirti Kulhari (Mumtaz), and others.

We also loved actress Rasika Dugal's past performaces in Mirzapur (S1 & S2) Series, Mirzapur (Season 3/2024) Series and Delhi Crime (S1 & S2) Series.

This intriguing crime drama is set in the early 1990s and thankfully, all the ensemble cast members played their roles perfectly. Truth is, its entire team made it a fascinating show.

The conclusion

In this Hindi series, the smart writers have given loads of funny dialogues and witty one-liners to its characters. No doubt, some of them are perfect meme materials (like the one picture shared above) for today’s young generations of social media users. We loved this trip down memory lane, in the early 1990s era (1993) when hi-tech and mobiles did not dominate our lives. It made us nostalgic. With only six episodes, it is a perfect series for the marathon watch. Now, we shall eagerly await its season 2, as the season 1 had a cliffhanger ending. To conclude, it is a very made show, a good suspense-filled Hindi detective series.

Spoiler about the last and sixth episodes of season one

Listing two details from the sixth episode

  • It presents a portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, complete with his signature deerstalker cap, cigar, and a book from the illustrious Sherlock Holmes series, specifically The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Thereby, in a way, this Hindi series pays its respect to the original character.
  • Also, in the final scene of the Indian series, Shekhar Home and Dr Jayvrat Sahni (M) fall (or jump) from the famous Howrah Bridge of Kolkotta. Perhaps, this scene can be related to the iconic story “The Final Problem”, where Sherlock Holmes and Jim Moriarty fall from the Reichenbach Falls.

This Hindi series also managed to surprise us with its ending. So, mind you, this series is not an exact copy of Sherlock Holmes and his detective cases.
