The storyline/plotline/synopsis/summary

Supacell tracks the experiences of five Black South Londoners who struggle with sickle cell disease. Upon realizing their extraordinary powers, one man brings these five ordinary South London residents together to save the woman he holds dear in the first season. Besides, when they all start to develop superhuman abilities related to their illness, they must band together to evade capture by a government organization that aims to manipulate them. Blending social commentary with superhero action, Supacell offers a fresh perspective in the realm of superhero storytelling in London, United Kingdom.

Show creator – Rapman aka Andrew Onwubolu & his Superhero ideas

As we mentioned earlier, this Supacell series was created by Rapman, aka, Andrew Onwubolu. He is a multifaceted talent and is a well-known rapper, record producer, screenwriter, and film director. Interestingly, this British rapper turned filmmaker Rapman is known for his popular three-part YouTube series “Shiro’s Story” and his 2019 directorial debut “Blue Story.” Furthermore, he is celebrated for his thought-provoking exploration of societal issues and his distinctive storytelling method using rap as a medium.

“I’ve been watching superhero stuff since I was a kid and it’s always set in New York, it’s always a big drama in New York, and I love New York but London is a crazy city as well. It’s like why are we not portraying that more? So for me I want people from the States, I want people in Africa, I want people in other parts of Europe, to really be like, ‘Oh that’s what it’s like in London! That’s the Black experience in London.’ That’s what London is really like, because how you see the parties, the music they listen to [in Supacell], that is literally South London. The only thing that you see made-up there is the powers, but everything else is the British experience as a Black person in the United Kingdom. So I’m hoping that it’s like an education for people that don’t know what it’s like. I’m really excited.”

A brief note about their Superpower – jaundice & sickle cell anaemia

In Supacell, Michael and the other characters possess yellow glowing eyes due to jaundice, a common indication of sickle cell disease. This characteristic mirrors a real-life symptom and signifies the manifestation of their superhuman abilities. Therefore, this series also explores sickle cell anaemia within the framework of a superhero story, highlighting how the condition can bestow exceptional abilities upon an individual. It portrays sickle cell as the origin of these superhuman powers.

“It’s something that has always affected our community and I never understood it. I wanted to show how a (sickle cell & Jaundice) diseases like this can make you extraordinary.”

Rapman (Andrew Onwubolu MBE) | BBC

Thus, creator Rapman discussed this compelling narrative and elucidated his intention to shed light on a prevalent illness that disproportionately impacts individuals in the Sub-Saharan African nations.

What did we like about it – the intelligent script, the ensemble cast, etc

As mentioned, this show about the Superhuman was written, created and directed by Rapman. Using this superhero tale, he brings to light quite a few important subjects. The common people belonging to the Black Community of South London face some of these challenges in their daily lives. In addition to the sickle cell disease among the Blacks, it touches upon important matters. For instance, the issues of systematic racism, lack of opportunities, drugs and gang-related problems in the Black community.

All of these points in question have been smartly incorporated into its insightful script. The cinematography and special effects played their parts in turning the script into an entertaining Sci-fi series. In the first season of this series, we liked the background stories of the 4 Superheroes and 1 Superheroine. They have been portrayed by Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Josh Tedeku, Tosin Cole, Calvin Demba and Nadine Mills, respectively. We liked the fact that at least one episode was dedicated to each one of them. Even the supporting cast members have been good in it.

The conclusion

The cliffhanger ending hints at the possibility of another season of Supacell being in the works, although Netflix has not yet confirmed any details. We enjoyed watching season 1 of Supacell and now we are waiting for the next.
