Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is a former storm chaser who is deeply affected by a traumatic experience with a tornado from her college days. Now residing in New York City, she analyzes storm patterns from the safety of her screens. However, her college friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) entices her to return to the vast plains of Oklahoma to evaluate an innovative tracking system.
Back in Oklahoma, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), a captivating and impulsive social media influencer who thrives on showcasing his storm-chasing adventures with his exuberant team, seeking ever-greater thrills. As the storm season intensifies, they encounter alarming and unprecedented phenomena, and Kate, Tyler, and their rival teams find themselves directly in the trajectory of several storm systems converging over central Oklahoma, engaged in a fight for survival.
Predictable tale, but the special effects are impressive
In this disaster movie, the lead characters Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Tyler Owens (Glen Powell) are completely besotted with the idea of chasing the dangerous storms. Equipped with the latest high-tech gadgets, they and their respective teams chase one catastrophic tornado after another.
Check some of the lines that we liked from this film.
Kate: If you feel it, chase it!
Tyler: It's part science ... and part religion.
Tyler: You don't face your fears, you ride 'em.
Javi: This is Kate's favorite slogan: taming the tornado.
Although, this story moves along the predictable path; we were impressed with the high-quality special effects in this movie, as it brought powerful twisters to our screens. The devastating power and disastrous consequences of such tornados and twisters have been realistically depicted in the movie. Besides, it was fun to watch, these modern-day storm chasers utilize the latest methods and technologies in tornado investigation. Really, how much science has progressed in the last few decades?
We liked the lead pair of Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell
We are watching more of American actor Glen Powell in Hollywood movies, and we certainly like his acts in the diverse range of movies. Meanwhile, the British actress Daisy Edgar-Jones seemed to be picky, when choosing her projects. Both Glen and Daisy certainly made an unlikely pair in the film. And, in this movie, their first mutual love seemed to be chasing the destructive Twisters.
Glen Powell - we saw him in the "Hit Man" (2024) movie and the "Anyone But You" (2023) movie.
Daisy Edgar-Jones - we last saw her in "Where the Crawdads Sing" (2022) movie.
In this movie, during their visit to the rodeo, Tyler discloses to Kate that he has a background as a rodeo cowboy. This revelation clarifies the origin of his nickname, 'The Tornado Wrangler,' as well as the significance of his emblem, which features a tornado adorned with bull horns. And interestingly, Glen Powell's parents (real-life) can be seen seated behind him and Daisy Edgar-Jones during the rodeo sequence.
With the “Tarnados” being the central attraction in this adventure movie, the rest of the cast did not have much to perform. Still, we liked the performances of the supporting cast members – Anthony Ramos (Javi), Brandon Perea (Boone), Maura Tierney (Cathy), Harry Hadden-Paton (Ben), Kiernan Shipka (Addy), Sasha Lane (Lily), etc.
The conclusion
Before we conclude, it is worth repeating – this movie is a sequel to the original Twister (1996) movie by name only. So, this Twisters (2024) movie introduces a completely new story and new characters revolving around the calamitous Tornados. We enjoyed watching this well-made disaster movie.
