Bakasura Restaurant: Love It?

Bakasura Restaurant (2025/India) is an original Telugu-language movie that combines the horror and comedy genres to entertain the audience. And perhaps, this Indian movie draws inspiration from the popular Hindu Mythological figure of Bakasura, who was a well-known monster (Rakshasa) with an incredible appetite.

And to be honest, we first heard of “Bakasura” in the Mahabharata saga. So, this man (and/or a ghost) named “Bakasura” shares an extreme and insatiable hunger in this Telugu movie too. However, its makers have changed the origin story of the “Bakasura” in this movie. Maybe because of the demands of the tale.

Predictable Ghost Film Entertained Us With Youthful Comedy

Please note that in the Mahabharata epic text, Baksura is described as a formidable rakshasa who instilled terror in the city of Ekacakra. Moreover, he forced the Ekacakra king to provide him with daily offerings of food and individuals. So, this demon was finally killed by Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers, who was safeguarding the family that had offered the Pandavas shelter. Therefore, the Bakasura is a demon (and/or monster) associated with Hindu mythology.

The synopsis

Paramesh (Praveen), a middle-class techie, and his carefree bachelor friends chase their foodie dreams, but their YouTube experiment in a haunted house invites an unexpected guest - a ghost with an appetite!

A wish made by five youngsters leads them to unveil a supernatural force lurking around them.

Please note that we shall not be sharing the detailed storyline of the movie here, as it might ruin your viewing pleasure. 

So, we shall share only a few details here.

A decent horror comedy movie

It was the first time time, we were watching an Indian movie, which had a completely unknown star cast. Honestly, we have not seen any of their movies before. Still, we decided to take a plunge, after waiting for a while (more than a month) and then watch it.

The first half of the Telugu movie focuses on the daily struggle of 5 youngsters who are trying to make it big.

So, like a typical (middle-class) Indian youngster, they make YouTube videos. And interestingly, their YouTube videos primarily focus on exploring the Ghost Stories. However, because of their own mistakes, their YouTube live videos face huge credibility problems among their buyers. As a consequence, their YouTube channel fails to get valuable subscribers. On the flip side, on one of their visit to the haunted place, an extremely hungry Ghost Bakka Suri/Bakasura (Harsha Chemudu) inadvertently accompanies them to their house.

And then the second half depicts how the Bakasura ghost brings a chaotic horror comedy into the lives of these 5 youngsters.

Certainly, the second half is the most entertaining portion of the movie. In the end, will the Bakasura ruin the lives of these 5 youngsters or help them realise their dreams? That is the story of the movie in simple words.

So, the SJ Shiva is omnipresent in this film

The writer and director SJ Shiva has shared a funny and entertaining movie. Devoid of any well-known and high-profile stars, he has created an enjoyable movie with an interesting bunch of youngsters. Among the ensemble cast, only the 5 youngsters and the Bakasura have a big chunk of the roles and screen time. And they take huge advantage of the acting opportunities that have come their way. Notably, the 2 young ladies did not have much to do, perhaps because of the script. We liked the performances of Praveen (Paramesh) and Harsha Chemudu (Bakka Suri/Bakasura) in the film.

To conclude, did we love it?

This film has 2 of our favourite ingredients, good food dishes for foodies and quite a few LOL (laughing out loud) moments for the audience. And that is what we really like about it. Maybe a better and tighter first half would have made us love it. Still, it is a good time-pass movie. And it seems there is more to come. To conclude, well done, SJ Shiva, SJ Music, SJ Movies and his entire movie-making team for giving us a hilariously funny horror comedy rooted in Indian folklore. They have done it on a limited budget and with minimal resources.
