Dexter: Resurrection (Season 1/USA/2025) series brings back to life the fan-favourite serial killer. But then, he is not the only serial murderer in bustling New York City. This NYC has many immoral serial killers. And most of them are itching for a kill. Why do these psychopaths continue killing their innocent victims?
No idea. But things take an interesting turn as Dexter and his unique moral code (instilled by his late dad, Harry) are in NYC. Now, will he start hunting down these serial killers? Well, isn’t it another fascinating premise of this show? Imagine Dexter hunting a bunch of deadly serial killers in NYC.
Is Dexter Hunting & Killing the Serial Killers in New York?
Notably, the Dexter shows are based on the "Dexter" novels and the novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" by Jeff Lindsay. The latest "Dexter: Resurrection" show is based on the Showtime series "Dexter" developed for television by James Manos Jr. So, it follows the story of these 3 well-known shows: Dexter (2006-2013) series, Dexter - New Blood (2021-2022) series, and Dexter - Original Sin (2024-2025) series. In fact, the latest "Dexter: Resurrection" series is a continuation of the story of the "Dexter - New Blood" series.
Is the latest 2025 series actually the revival of a Serial Killer genre? Dexter, a serial killer, comes back to life and uses Harry's code to bring justice. A bizarre but captivating storyline. But is this what happens in this show?

The introduction to the anti-hero, Dexter & his code
Dexter (alias Bay Harbour Butcher or The Dark Passenger) is alive and kicking (or killing). This is a rare show that celebrates an anti-hero. A couple of decades ago, Dexter (Michael C. Hall) used to work as a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department. Then, one day, he completely disappeared. And now, after many years, Dexter has been resurrected. He wishes to stay close to his teenage son, Harry Morgan (James Remar), so he shifts to NYC and drives share-ride taxis. And of course, there is “NYC’s Dark Passenger”, the notorious serial killer, who is targeting the drivers of share-ride taxis.
Where is this crime tale going? Hopefully, you get the drift.
Dexter adheres to a code of ethics that was instilled in him by his adoptive father, Harry. He refers to this code as "The Code of Harry" or "The Code," which is founded on 2 key principles: he may only kill those for whom he has solid evidence of murder, and he must ensure that he does not get caught.
Just a timely reminder, so far, Dexter has killed more than 150 people in the three series mentioned above. But before you start pointing a finger at him, it is worth mentioning that most of his victims were deadly killers. The law of the land (in Miami, Florida, USA) was unable to catch them. So, his victims perfectly fit his dad Harry’s code of ethics. And therefore, when these dangerous murderers entered the radar of Dexter, he had no other option but to clean out society’s trash. His killing ground was in Miami at that time. Since then, he moved around. Now, it seems he has settled down in NYC.
Now, you all can only guess his future?
The script is shockingly good, with many twist and turns
Lest we forget, the dormant fatherly love of Dexter is coming to the fore in the Dexter: Resurrection show. He is willing to go to any length to protect his teenage son, Harrison Morgan (Jack Alcott), from all kinds of dangers and threats. Curiously, we are also introduced to the infamous “Dark Passenger Killer, aka Red”. He is murdering the NYC ride-share drivers in this crime drama. So, we certainly liked the smart use of the “Dark Passenger” term in it. Also, the “Dark Passenger” expression ties up the past and the present timeline. Moreover, this phrase also gives Dexter an excuse to find his way back into starting to kill, once again.
The term "Dark Passenger" in Dexter's context refers to the intense and compelling urge to kill that has influenced him since his early years, arising from the trauma he faced as a young boy. This inner voice acts as a driving force within him, urging him to commit acts of murder.
There is another sub-plot focusing on an eccentric billionaire, Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage). He has misused his wealth as well as the expertise of ex-forces operative Charley (Uma Thurman) to form a secret club of psychopathic serial killers. And as luck would have it, even Dexter (Michael C. Hall) joins this exclusive and small fraternity of serial killers. Leon has perfectly described these killers as the apex predators of the human race. And as expected, somehow the deeply ingrained “The Code of Harry” pushes Dexter to start hunting these apex predators. Not surprisingly, the dangerous consequences await Dexter, once again.
What a talented bunch of ensemble cast, led by Michael C. Hall
It is always good to see the protagonist and the fan favourite serial killer, Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), being resurrected one more time. The dedicated fans of the “Dexter Universe” cannot seem to get enough of him. Honestly, Michael C. Hall has really owned and personified the life of Dexter. We often wonder why Michael C. Hall looks so comfortable portraying the real Bay Harbour Butcher on-screen. Is he a natural-born killer? On-screen, of course. Besides, it is always good to catch up with familiar characters. Both the old men, James Remar (Harry Morgan) and David Zayas (Angel Batista), are good to watch again.
Backed by a layered and mystery-filled storyline, all of these cast members fascinatingly portrayed their respective characters. Then there are a bunch of new members added to the ensemble cast of the “Dexter: Resurrection” show. The main antagonists are played by Peter Dinklage (Leon Prater) and Uma Thurman (Charley). Meanwhile, the supporting cast of Jack Alcott (Harrison Morgan), Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (Blessing Kamara), JillMarie Lawrence (Constance), Emily Kimball (Gigi) and others played their characters well, too. Also, a bunch of expected/unexpected stars portray the serial killers, Krysten Ritter (Mia Lapierre), Eric Stonestreet (Al), David Dastmalchian (Gareth), Neil Patrick Harris (Lowell), and Marc Menchaca (Red), in a captivating manner.
The conclusion, but also the beginning of a fresh chapter of Dexter: Resurrection
The mantra is expect the unexpected in the Dexter: Resurrection series.
Still, what is with the one more cliff-hanger ending in the Dexter series? It appears as if its creators have gained vast experience in keeping the vast legions of the “Dexter” universe fans, permanently hooked on it. There is no doubt that the killing is a very high-risk crime. And Dexter is making powerful enemies. He always finds himself being hunted and cornered. But he always manages to find a way out. Not only does he survive, but he also thrives. No wonder he is a proverbial experienced escape artist. Nevertheless, we earnestly hope that his young son Harrison remains safe.
However, the killers are always around in this dangerous world.
So, for how long can Dexter keep going?
Once again, our fingers are crossed.
