Series Synopsis

Abhirami (Aparna Balamurali) seeks her missing fiancé Kiran (Hakeem Shajahan), joining forces with journalist Aswin (Asif Ali). Their investigation reveals an intricate web of secrets, drawing them into a mystery more complex than anticipated.

Every clue deepens the illusion, until truth itself feels like a mirage.

Please note that this Malayalam mystery drama, ‘Mirage’, comes from a famous writer and director, Jeethu Joseph.

In the recent past, he has given us quite a good bunch of movies, namely, Memories (2013), Drishyam (2013), Thambi (2019), Drishyam 2 (2021), etc. Not surprisingly, even ‘Mirage’ is a gripping thriller.

Twists & Turns

While watching this mystery-filled drama movie, we realised that if we share any of the plot and storyline details, then it will surely ruin your viewing pleasure. So, we will try to be extremely careful while sharing any details about this movie from Kerala. Right after the opening scene of the tragic train accident, Abhirami’s fiancé Kiran suddenly disappears. Is Kiran dead in that train accident? Or is he still alive?

Not only Abhirami but also the movie viewers are frantically searching for Kiran. As everyone wants to learn the truth.

But as the film title suggests, it is all a Mirage.

Not surprisingly, along with Abhirami, Hrithika, Aswin and SP Aarumugam join her search for the missing hard-drive data, as well as Kiran.

As a result, all of them (and movie viewers) are led through a tangled web of lies, deceit, fraud, and danger. Notably, almost all of them are double-faced persons. Can they be trusted?

No, we do not think so. Fascinatingly, all the key characters, viz., Abhirami, Hrithika, Aswin and SP Aarumugam have their own version of truth. So, one should take their stories with a pinch of salt. However, not all of their tales are rubbish and untrue. So, you be careful, as to whose account of a happening to trust.

Grey Characters

Now, should we believe the lady protagonist, Abhirami (Aparna Balamurali), and her rendition of the story in this movie? Well, you decide that yourself. Meanwhile, in the early part of the movie, it was established that Kiran (Hakeem Shajahan) is one of the bad guys. But he is not alone. Also, his big boss and the owner of the financial consultancy firm, Rajkumar (Saravanan), is a criminal.

On the other hand, even the senior cop, SP Aarumugam (Sampath Raj), is painted as a dishonest and untrustworthy person. Moreover, Rajkumar’s main henchman (Aruvi Madhan) is a gun-wielding muscleman who continues to threaten Abhirami. Then, there are two more key characters. The first one is Hrithika (Hannah Reji Koshy), who is an office colleague and an old friend of Abhirami. And the second one is Aswin Kumar (Asif Ali), who is a YouTuber journalist and her new friend.

Thus, the big question is, should Abhirami blindly depend on her friends?

No, once again, we do not think so. As each one of these characters is busy hiding something. They are sharing only the half-truth.

All the key actors mentioned herein have done a fairly good job in portraying their complicated characters. However, the piecemeal storytelling often stops the movie audience from making an emotional connection with the characters in the film.

Conclusion

Despite its flaws, we think that its writers, director, and actors have done a fairly decent job. Most certainly, they have made an edge-of-the-seat mystery drama. As most of the time, its makers keep dropping new facts about the (past and present) misdeeds of the movie characters. Besides, they continue to add new plot twists and turns to keep us engaged.

They even use unexpected flashback scenes to deliver a fresh set of information. No wonder they did manage to compel us to keep guessing till the end.

As to what is happening and what is going to happen?

Or is it all a ‘Mirage’?
