But soon he discovered that the case did not present itself as a simple criminal one. This was a layered case, where nothing is as straightforward as it seems. And it kept us glued to the screen.

One of the most interesting aspects of this engaging police procedural drama is that an angry police official is pitted against the furious villains. Not surprisingly, both the protagonist cop and the antagonist criminals viciously battle each other. Soon, their hostility takes a personal turn. So, who will have the last laugh?

The introduction

We are watching the good quality Malayalam cinema these days, and the majority of them are fascinating cop dramas. A few days ago, we reviewed a hard-hitting cop drama “Ronth“, which exposed the harsh realities of police service in India. Now, we are back to watching the commercial movies. So, it was fun to watch the good people (Cops) trying to catch the bad people (Criminals) of the land. Both the protagonist cop and the antagonist criminals are indulging in the game of one-upmanship. This film is like the proverbial cat-and-mouse game. Who wins in the end?

Kunchacko Boban plays the protagonist cop, convincingly

We are introduced to the lead character, R. Harishankar (Kunchacko Boban), who has been demoted from the senior post of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) to that of a junior Circle Inspector (CI) post in the Kerala Police force. Certainly, he is down but not out. While carrying out his policing duties, he displays a no-nonsense attitude and serious demeanour. No doubt, he loves his demanding police job. That always comes ahead of his loving family. But then, the police force needs his professional and dedicated approach towards solving a sophisticated crime being committed by intelligent criminals.

A group of youngsters portray the murderous antagonists, admirably

We liked the intimidating and menacing presence of these five villainous youngsters in this cop drama. They play the worthy antagonists to the tough-as-nails protagonist cop. What is interesting about this 5-member criminal gang is the presence of two young girls. And, when it comes to unleashing raw violence on their unsuspecting prey, these two girls are as bad as the other three guys in the group. They are intelligent and educated, but it appears that they have lost their humanity a while ago. Devoid of any guiding moral compass, they commit the most heinous of crimes without any qualms. Can they be stopped by the hero?

The conclusion

However, one does wonder about the basic premise of this cop drama movie. Wherein, a bunch of drug addict kids can outthink and outsmart the seasoned cops. Now, if you can overlook this crucial aspect like us, then you will certainly enjoy it more. Then, you should also be prepared to move back and forth between different timelines in this tale of crimes. Moreover, you will come across quite a few layers in its convoluted storyline while watching this police drama. But these are what make it a suspenseful and intriguing film. And we certainly liked the Officer on Duty.
