Synopsis (official)
In the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia, an FBI agent, Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo), heads a task force assembled to put an end to a string of violent robberies led by an unsuspecting family man, Robbie Prendergrast (Tom Pelphrey), whose wife left him with 2 kids.
Robberies & Deaths

The grim but realistic fictional crime tale is set in the Philadelphia countryside, somewhere on the Eastern Coast of the United States of America. The scenes of crimes are in Montgomery County and Delaware County, Pennsylvania. These suburbs are dominated by a Dark Hearts Motorcycle Gang, which has been doing a booming drug business. But then, a small crew of three members start targeting and robbing their drug houses, which are often flush with cash. Everything was going smoothly for the robbers led by Robbie. But then, during one of the robberies, a violent shootout happens between the robbers and the gang members.

The result was tragic indeed. A few dead bodies. A missing kid, Sam. And a full-blown armed gang war is on the horizon. So, a TASK Force is formed by the FBI to solve the spate of armed robberies and find the kid, before it is too late.

Task Force

The big question is whether Tom can lead his ragtag Task team of young and inexperienced juniors, Aleah, Anthony and Elizabeth, to find the missing boy and catch the criminals. Especially when most of them are carrying some kind of heavy baggage from their family and professional lives.

Team Robbers

One of the key questions to ask is why these 3 robbers are going after the Dark Hearts Motorcycle Gang? What is their motivation for undertaking such a high-risk job? They could be killed. Why are they putting their family members in grave danger? Is it for money? Or is it something else?

Gang Members

The notorious Dark Hearts Motorcycle Gang is led by vicious criminals who are known to carry out violent crimes. And, they share a cosy (quid-pro-quo) relationship with the local police department officials. As a result, they often get away with the brutal beatings and murders. Everyone fears the gang.

2Jayson Wilkes (Sam Keeley)Local Boss of the Gang

Two Families

Now, as we mentioned in the earlier paragraphs, the two family men, Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo) and Robbie Prendergrast (Tom Pelphrey), find themselves in a conundrum. Both of them want safe and secure lives for their kids. So, how will they get out of the jam that they find themselves in? Who will survive in the end? There is no doubt that both Tom and Robbie are grieving the loss of their loved ones. And that takes a toll on the other members of their respective families. This is a dark and grim story about loss and redemption. In a way, this beautifully layered story takes us on an immersive journey into the lives of two families.

Life Is All About Strong Family Ties In This Impressive FBI Drama

What’s Good?

Well, we are sharing a bunch of reasons why we think it is an excellent crime drama from HBO Max, which is renowned for their great human stories.

✅ After the wonderful “Mare of Easttown” (2021) Series, the show creator Brad Ingelsby, along with fellow writer David Obzud, has given us a wise and incisive tale about the human behaviour. Notably, in this emotional drama, there is no such thing as Black and White (Good or Bad). There are lots of grey shades.

✅ Also, the cinematographers, Alex Disenhof, and Elie Smolkin have done a good job in capturing contrasting images. On one hand, we see the dark and gloomy sight of the club and the stash houses. Then, on the other hand, we see the serene beauty of the natural forest area.

✅ A fascinating way of quick editing was done in this series by its editors, Keiko Deguchi and Amy E. Duddleston. So, at a time, the viewers get a chance to follow two or more storylines (events/incidents) at the same time.

✅ Also, the music composer Dan Deacon very smartly used both the silence and the background music simultaneously inside an episode. It enabled the viewers to see the real-time changes, among the different strands of the story.

✅ The acting performances were top-class by both Mark Ruffalo (Tom Brandis) and Tom Pelphrey (Robbie Prendergrast). Both of them conveyed the pain and grief that their respective characters were carrying within themselves perfectly.

✅ Not to be left behind, the young actress Emilia Jones (Maeve) was too good in the series. Her character was “like a deer in headlights”, still, she displayed enough maturity and smartness to do the right thing for her family and society.

In fact, the entire ensemble cast played their characters quite well.

The Conclusion

We loved the ending of the Task series, as it managed to deliver a happy and satisfactory closure to most of the characters. Finally, the ‘Karma’ caught up with each one of the major characters. We loved the “Deer and Vagrant Bird” references and the following “Overlook” dialogue, too.

The Task series delivered an engrossing drama, which was an excellent crime series to watch.

Tom Brandis: You know what they say about wisdom, Kath?
Kathleen McGinty: No.
Tom Brandis: It's knowing what to overlook.
Kathleen McGinty: Hm.
