Brief Storyline
The Beast And In Me!!
In your left corner of the above poster is the protagonist, best-selling author Aggie Wiggs (Claire Danes), who is still grieving the painful loss of her son. And after the tragic demise of her son, even her life partner, Shelley (Natalie Morales), has divorced and left their family.
Then, in the right-hand corner of the above poster is the antagonist, shady businessman Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys), whose wife has disappeared. And according to the FBI agent and even the word on the streets, the husband, Nile Jarvis, is accused of murdering his missing wife.
Pain needs a partner?
Their paths crossed, soon after the businessman Nile Jarvis became the next-door neighbour of the author Aggie Wiggs. But that is not all. From being a neighbourly acquaintance, they become a friend! And, soon, after taking the due permission from Nile, Aggie starts to write a book about his controversial life.
The writer Aggie wants to search for the truth. Meanwhile, the murder accused businessman Nile wishes to hide his deadly secrets. Or, perhaps, both Aggie and Nile are two sides of the same coin. One is light, while the other is darkness. Do they complement each other?
Or do they complete each other? Anyway, this kind of complex relationship between the two creates complications in their lives.
So, the story delves into the mind game of one-upmanship between the protagonist and the antagonist.
Ultimately, it is about the survival of the fittest in the end.
The ‘Karma’
📌In the final episode, the following dialogue about “Karma” reminded us of how far the famous ancient philosophy has travelled from our nation, India.
Every ending is a beginning.
We turn the page, but we can't outrun our story.
And really, that's what Buddhists meant by karma.
For them, karma is not about cosmic payback.
The universe enacting retribution from on high.
For them, karma is more like seeds we plant.
.
Seeds we pass down.
.
We reap what we sow in this life or the next.
Karma is our inheritance and our birth right.
.
But however we choose to define it, Nile was right about one thing: karma is a m*therf*cker.
Now, it is up to the viewers to interpret the ending in their own ways.
Protagonist & Antagonist
Well, despite the predictable storyline, we liked the performances of these actresses/actors in the show.
✅ The lead actress, Claire Danes, has portrayed the grieving mother, Aggie Wiggs, wonderfully. Moreover, Claire completely owns this complex and vulnerable character. And, deep down, Aggie is a smart and moral person. So, can she beat Nile in this psychological drama?
We still fondly remember American actress Claire’s amazing performance as the CIA agent in the Homeland (2011-2020) series.
✅ The lead actor, Matthew Rhys, has flawlessly played the suave but sinister character of Nile Jarvis. In this show, Nile Jarvis is a crafty businessman who is also an unrepentant criminal. It seems that Nile’s moral compass has completely broken down. Thus, can his criminal mind beat Aggie in this mind game?
And not to forget, the Welsh actor Matthew, entertained us in The Americans (2013-2018) series as a spy, in the last decade.
✅ Among the supporting cast members, we liked the acting of Brittany Snow (Nina), Jonathan Banks (Martin Jarvis), Tim Guinee (Wrecking Ball), Natalie Morales (Shelley), David Lyons (Brian Abbott), Hettienne Park (Erika Breton), etc. They portrayed their respective characters quite well.
They all kept us invested in this limited mini-series.

The Conclusion
To answer, is “The Beast In Me” a terrific mystery drama? And to be honest, this story has quite a few twists and turns. Some of them are expected ones, and some are unexpected ones. But we could guess some of them. And even the flashback story was predictable. Therefore, it certainly does not fall in the great category, but it is still terrific to watch. And let us try to answer this one too: when you chase a monster, what do you become? We think, usually the survival instincts kick in, and then darkness takes over you. This is what happened with Aggie Wiggs in this mini-series.
Lastly, despite its flaws, the acting by the two lead performers (Claire and Matthew) and others definitely made it a good, thrilling mystery drama to watch this weekend. So, it is a good drama.
