Murder & Mystery Tale
With only 3 episodes and with less than 3 hours of run-time of Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, its makers have tried to add both suspense and thrill in its plotline. And they did succeed quite a bit in adding a sense of urgency to this murder and mystery tale. Although there was quite a fair bit of unevenness in the storytelling. Still, the murders, twists and turns kept happening regularly to keep us engaged. And, therefore, we binged it at one go. As we mentioned above, this murder-mystery drama is set in the period between World War I (1914–1918) and World War II (1939–1945), in the 1920s in Europe.
The idea of (World/European) war was the dominant theme.

Chris Chibnall
In the past, the show creator and writer from the UK, Chris Chibnall, has given us two very popular series, Broadchurch (2013-2017) and Dr Who (2007-2022). So, we wonder why he picked “The Seven Dials Mystery” novel by Agatha Christie for the screen adaptation. Especially, when the Agatha Christie book that inspired this series was met with considerable disapproval from critics in both the UK and the US when it was first published almost a century ago. Anyway, we can only speculate as of now.
Moreover, it is worth noting that the popular crime novelist Agatha Christie (1890–1976) has written 66 detective novels and 15 short-story collections. So, there is enough resource material available.
Good & Bad
📍 Despite the disapproving critics, we think the Agatha Christie original book is still a good murder-mystery novel. And therefore, we do wonder why the series changes a few things in its plotline.
[Despite the series preserving the essence of Agatha Christie’s original book, the adaptation takes substantial liberties that adjust the prominence of various characters and change the story’s ending.]
📍Maybe the makers of “Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials” changed the ending and other things to surprise the viewers. Especially, all those who have read the original novel penned by Agatha Christie.
📍Also, one of the highlights of the show is the recreation of the historical era of 1920s Britain. The era when the ladies in Britain were still finding their voice in the political and social arena.
📍Among the ensemble actors and actresses, we liked the performance of lively Mia McKenna-Bruce, who portrayed the protagonist, Lady Eileen ‘Bundle’ Brent. In this murder mystery show, she is really a bundle of smart and gumption. And, no doubt, with her wit and high energy, Mia McKenna-Bruce really carries this show on her shoulders.
📍Both the senior professional artists, Martin Freeman (Superintendent Battle), and Helena Bonham Carter (Lady Caterham), did play parts quite well in “Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials” series. But, seriously, they did not have much to do.
