A Mazy & Foggy Crime Tale
A young woman, Preet (Pooja Bhamrah), is found murdered inside a barn in her home. At first instance, it seems to be a brutal and sensational murder case for a small fictional town, Dalerpura, in Punjab. The person in charge of the local police station (thana) assigns the police case to SI Dhanwant Kaur (Mona Singh) and ASI Amarpal Garundi (Barun Sobti). And, ask to solve and close the murder case as soon as possible. In this layered crime drama storyline, both the police officials, Dhanwant Kaur and Amarpal Garundi, try their best to catch the murderer.
But it is not an open-and-shut case, especially when the family and social dynamics are involved.
Initially, the police officials start by taking a closer look at the friends and family members of the deceased. But then, as they dig deep into the homicide matter, they come across the cases of infidelities, extra-marital affairs, property disputes, monetary issues, swindlers, and much more.
Moreover, Dhanwant is dealing with a huge tragedy in her personal life. At the same time, Amarpal is facing complicated relationship challenges in his own marital life. Yet, both of them carry on dedicatedly to solve the tangled crime cases.
In the end, all is well that ends well for them.
Indian Family & Social Issues
This eye-opening crime drama has woven an intricate storyline, taking into account the ground realities in Punjab, India.
If you pay close attention to its storyline, then you will come across some of the uncomfortable truths about how families and society work in India.
- In patrilineal families (and society) of Northern India, the property and titles are generally passed down from father to son.
- There is a clear distinction in the way that Indian families (and society) treat their male kids and female children.
- In Punjab, there is a strange fascination with migrating to Western nations and becoming a non-resident Indian (NRI).
- With so much migration, economic ladder movements and other reasons, the farm labourers are in short supply.
- So, the illegal cases of human trafficking and bonded labourers have been reported in India.
- Mostly, the labourers from the poor Eastern states of India move towards the greener pastures for their livelihood.
- Once again in the Kohrra series, there is a clear clash of two contrasting ideas: Traditional versus Modern.
- Do not treat fellow humans like animals, and a few more important issues.
Having spent a few years living in different cities of Punjab, we could attest that this crime drama draws a lot from the harsh realities of the state. Besides, we are from Jharkhand, and we have witnessed and written about the mass migration of the poverty-stricken people from here.
Like these on-screen characters, we too live in a complex and stratified society with all of its complexities.
Realistic Portrayal
One of the positive aspects of this cop drama is that it is steeped in reality. All the police personnel in this show really looked and behaved like real police of Punjab, India. Both the leading characters, SI Dhanwant Kaur and ASI Amarpal Garundi, are real humans with family problems in their respective lives. Unlike their Indian movie hero (or heroine) cop characters, they are not superheroes with amazing fighting skills. Instead, these two police characters are duty-bound and dedicated officials. They are also brave and understanding, as they understand the psyche of the people around them.
The homicide victim, Preet, is an honest and liberated young woman. Having lived in America (USA) for years, perhaps she came to know and understand the meaning of slavery, equality, rights, and other bedrocks of modern Western society. Her family and social dynamism let her down in the end. That’s tragic.
Series Poster

“Kohrra has been more than just a show for us—it’s a piece of our hearts. We’ve poured everything we have into this story, and seeing the love it has received is incredibly moving. It’s inspired us to come back with something even more powerful. We’re committed to telling stories that feel real, that reflect the lives of real people with rawness and authenticity, and that’s exactly what you’ll see in the new season on Netflix.”
Sudip Sharma, Co-Creator and Showrunner
Mona & Barun are excellent
To be honest, we really missed the presence of the actor Suvinder Vicky, who portrayed the SI Balbir Singh Sekhon with an amazing conviction in the season of the Kohrra series.
Now, in season two, Mona Singh has really stepped up and plays the SI Dhanwant Kaur with a lot of sensitivity and confidence. Her portrayal of a grieving mother and a cop, who re-joins the male-dominated police force after a year-long hiatus, due to a family tragedy. She is terrific in it. Her poignant story adds a lot of depth to her character. And, in the scene where she talks about her dedication was an emotional one. In addition, the scene where she listens to her husband’s honest confession. Some of the scenes really tug at our heartstrings.
And, once again, Barun Sobti simply slips into the role of ASI Amarpal Garundi, effortlessly. Like in season one, here too, in season two, his performance is on par with the protagonist. In fact, it will be difficult to pick our favourite among these two. Both Mona and Barun have given fascinating performances.
Among the ensemble cast, we also liked the performances of Prayrak Mehta, Muskan Arora, Mandeep Kaur Ghai, Anuraag Arora, and others.

Conclusion
The three show-runners, Sudip Sharma, Gunjit Chopra, and Diggi Sisodia, deserve huge credit. Not to forget both the series directors, Sudip Sharma and Faisal Rahman. It is amazing to note that Sudip Sharma is wearing so many hats in this show and doing praiseworthy jobs. For a second successive season, this team has given us a cerebral and thought-provoking series to savour. So, kudos to the entire team. To conclude, season two of the Kohrra did live up to its reputation. With almost a five-hour run time, Kohrra 2 is fit for binge-watching on a weekend or a holiday.
