Synopsis
A high-octane, heart-pounding contemporary thriller about the heist of the century. A typical day at Lochmill Capital in London (UK) is upended when armed thieves burst in and force Zara (Sophie Turner) and her best friend Luke (Archie Madekwe) to execute their demands. In the aftermath, conflicted detective Rhys (Jacob Fortune-Lloyd) races against time to find out who stole 4 billion pounds of people’s pensions and why.
6-Part Storylines
Well, broadly speaking, the storylines of the “Steal” series can be divided into six broad parts. And for your convenience, we have split its plotline into the following distinct parts.
In the first half of the series (from 1 to 3 episodes), the viewers will be forced to play the usual guessing game. As to what is really happening in the “Steal” series? And who has taken the money? And why?
- Heist: More than 4 billion pounds is stolen by a very well-armed group within a matter of a few minutes.
- Police Investigations: The London police and MI5 start their investigations into the heist of the century.
- Hired Professionals: A motley group of very well-trained specialists was hired for the job.
- Zara’s Involvement: Did Zara and Luke actively participate in the theft? What about the inside job?
- What was the rationale? Was there a hidden rationale behind the robbery of billions of pension funds?
- Who is the mastermind? Lastly, who was the mastermind behind the loot?
Then, in the second half of the series (from 4 to 6 episodes), slowly but surely, the answers began to trickle in. The flashbacks also help. And, all this while the antagonist mastermind hides in plain sight. That is the twist plot.
We have shared the broad outline of its story above. Now, we could have filled in the details of the above mentioned points, but that will definitely ruin your viewing pleasure. And ruin the suspense. So, we are not doing that.
Good & Bad
✅ On the whole, this new thrilling story manages to deliver a social and political message about the black (unaccounted) money of the rich and powerful people. Then there are the many financial loopholes and the tax havens.
✅️ Also, this thought-provoking series does try the ‘Activists’ or the ‘Terrorists’ labels for the thieves. And, at the end of the day, so to speak, the robbers did manage to raise many uncomfortable financial questions.
❌ However, there is a little bit of unevenness in its narration. The reasoning behind the heist seemed fine. But then the people started dying, and bodies started to pile up. In the end, who is going to pay for the crime? Nobody?
✅️ We liked the realistic portrayal of the real-life characters. They are not simple black and white. Most of them carry a shade of grey and immorality within themselves. And that is how the people actually behave around money.
✅️ In her second innings as an actress, Sophie Turner is certainly carrying the suspense drama like “Steal” on her shoulders. Sophie Turner portrays the flawed protagonist Zara Dunne quite impressively.
❌ It appears that the writers have used and inserted the MI5 in this crime tale for the dramatic effect and to provide another angle. Nevertheless, they were conveniently misused and discarded in this series.
✅️ Most of the ensemble cast had a limited screen presence. Still, we liked the performances of these actors, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd (DCI Rhys), Archie Madekwe (Luke), Andrew Howard (Sniper), Andrew Koji (Yoshida), etc.
Episodes Titles
Notably, the “Steal” series has been divided into 6 episodes with interesting financial market titles. And, actually, all the 6 episode titles are contemporary accounting terms.
| Titles | Financial Terms |
|---|---|
| Fill or Kill (E1) | A Fill or Kill (FOK) order In trading, the FOK represents a command to carry out a buy or sell order right away and in its entirety, or else the whole order is promptly cancelled. |
| Face Value (E2) | Face Value ~ Par Value It is a nominal, fixed amount printed on a stock certificate or bond. |
| Short Run (E3) | Short Run ~ Short Term It is a conceptual time period. |
| Risk On (E4) | It describes a (positive) market sentiment where investors are optimistic and willing to invest in riskier, higher-yield assets. |
| Pay Yourself First (E5) | Income – Saving = Expenses It is a budgeting strategy. |
| Dead Cat Bounce (E6) | It is a brief, temporary price recovery in a falling asset in a security or market that has experienced a significant, sharp decline. |
The explanation of the financial terms is only for your personal knowledge. These episode titles share only a loose connection with this series storylines.
Series Rating
| Focus Magazine (FM) Rating | 3.60/5 |
Conclusion
To conclude, we did binge-watch the “Steal” series. The monetary greed led to so many deaths. Besides, many powerful people were exposed for their irregular financial dealings when the £4 billion bounced around in hidden accounts in the tax havens. Yet, in the end, it was business as usual. That is the harsh reality of today’s world. And we did like the ending. Especially, the last episode and finale left us a bit unsatisfied. Despite that, it is a good show to watch, once.
