An Old & Predictable Storyline
In the mid 1970s, India witnessed the advent and rise of the ‘angry young man’ (aka AB/Amitabh Bachchan) in the Hindi movie landscape.
Now, it seems that the ‘angry old man’ (like AK/Anil Kapoor and others) is taking over the movies in the 21st century India. In fact, if one takes a closer look at the various action-packed Indian movies (of different languages) in recent years, then one would find many such films.
we are witnessing the advent and rise of the ‘angry old man’ in the action movies made in different languages across India.
Now, in this latest action flick, Subedaar Arjun Maurya (AK/Anil Kapoor) retires from active duty in the Indian Army. And the widower, Subedaar, moves back home to take care of his young college-going daughter. Thereby, in a way, he rejoins civilian life. Naturally, he experiences first-hand the struggling life of a common Indian compatriot. Along with Subedaar, we, the viewers, are introduced to the prevailing scenario of unplanned resource exploitation, widespread corruption, unemployment and strong-arm hooliganism (gundaism) in a small district in North India.
In the first half of the film, along with the leading hero, retired Subedar Arjun Maurya, come face-to-face with the harsh realities that the common Indian people face in their daily lives. While watching him go through the day-to-day grind, even we felt his sense of seething anger and helplessness. And it really hits hard.
One could see that ‘Subedaar’ was like a volcano, which was ready to erupt at the right moment. In fact, the film depicts how the grave circumstances force the Subedaar, his daughter and his army buddy into a tight and inescapable corner.
All of them find themselves backed against the wall with only one option: to fight back.
Senior Actors are Good
➕ The lead actor and hero, Anil Kapoor, has made this old formula Hindi masala movie a watchable one. In writers backed role, Anil Kapoor displayed his smart and stubborn persona of a real-life ‘fauzi’ (ex-armyman) in India. He played the role of a grieving and raging dad, almost perfectly.
Although we do not like violence, we still felt good when we watched an angry old man, Subedaar Arjun Maurya ‘uncle ji’, beat up a young gang leader, Prince (Aditya Rawal), publicly. And the open ending of the film suggests that Subedaar (and his army buddies) is ready to battle the enemies within the border.
➕The talented supporting actor, Saurabh Shukla, plays the steadfast army pal, Prabhakar, of Subedaar. A well-meaning middle-class person who has decided to bend in front of the local gangsters, perhaps for the sake of his family. He played his part quite well.
We really appreciate Saurabh Shukla’s depiction of a serious and grounded man who understands the harsh social realities in India. Not so long ago, he was tickling our funny bones in his usual comical act in the “Jolly LLB 3 (India, 2025) movie.
Young Performers are equally Good
➕ The young Indian actress, Radhikka Madan, portrays Subedaar Arjun’s daughter, Shyama Maurya, realistically, too. In the film, she plays a brave college student character, who is indeed her ‘fauzi’ father’s daughter. However, her relationship with her father is estranged.
Besides, she is facing harassment from her fellow male students. Tragically, this kind of situation is a grim reality in India. Actually, a news video is going viral in India, wherein a white-haired elderly father entered the college campus and beat up a young student who was allegedly harassing his daughter.
➕ Another young actor, Aditya Rawal, has portrayed the antagonist, Prince, in a praiseworthy manner. In this film, his character is an archetypal small-town bully who is drunk on his money and higher social status. Maybe his cockiness comes from the caste privileges and/or backing of armed goons.
To be honest, we could feel a lot of anger and hate towards his film character, Prince. And, we are sure that many Indians would have certainly come across such individuals in their lives. So, in a short span of time of couple of hours, Aditya Rawal has made us hate his villainous character, Prince.
The Lalla song is Apt
➕ In the film, whenever the old warhorses were beating the much younger criminals, the following Hindi song was played in the background. And, as the following lyrics excerpts suggest, the adults are trying to impart caution and wisdom to the youngsters about the potential dangers that lie ahead for them.
YouTube link to the 'Lalla' song from the Subedaar that we liked, as this playful song played in the background of action scenes.

The Conclusion
If you are an Anil Kapoor fan, then this film is surely a good film to watch. And while watching, be prepared for the surprise guest appearances in the film. Furthermore, the ending of the film suggests that maybe it is just the beginning of the movie franchise. ‘Subedaar’ is an entertaining one-man army film.
