Entrapped: Murder Case From Past!?

Entrapped Trapped (S3-2021) Series Featured Image

Entrapped (Trapped/Season Three) series depicts how past crimes catch up. Notably, this Nordic-Noir crime drama is an entertaining sequel to the award-winning Trapped series. Once again, two good artists, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Andri Ólafsson) and Ilmur Kristjánsdóttir (Hinrika Kristjánsdóttir) reprise their lead roles in this 2022 show.

So far, we have seen the First Season (S1/2015-201) as well as the Second Season (S2/2018-2019) of the “Trapped (Ófærð)” series. And we liked both seasons of this police drama from Iceland. Now, allow us to share the notes about the Nordic Noir.

The Nordic Noir is most often considered to be a specific genre of TV series. However, it also includes literature, film productions, and video games. Besides, it has even been extended to style, design, and music. Its key elements include a murky atmosphere, dark narratives, and flawed protagonists. Its popularity may lie in the fact that it usually undercuts the dominant narrative of the Nordics as thriving states with happy people and successful economies, but there is a dark underbelly here, too.

Please note that Netflix has released the third season of the Icelandic TV series Ófærð (Trapped) as the Entrapped series. The original Icelandic show Ófærð (Trapped) consisted of eight episodes in its third season. And its makers aired the said show on RÚV from October 17, 2021, to December 5, 2021. At a later date, Netflix released Entrapped on September 8, 2022, with a reduced episode count of six, internationally. Therefore, the Entrapped (S1/2022) series is actually the Trapped-Season Three (S3/2022) Series.

Spoiler Free Review of Entrapped (S1/2022) Series

The introduction

We turned up to watch “Entrapped”, the sequel (or the third season) of the “Trapped” series, because of four main reasons. Firstly, it belongs to the Nordic-Noir category. Secondly, we liked the original and fresh stories of the first two seasons. Thirdly, we loved watching actor Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Andri Ólafsson) and actress Ilmur Kristjánsdóttir (Hinrika Kristjánsdóttir) in it. Lastly, how could we pass up the chance to visit the beautiful landscape of Iceland?

The storyline

It seems that the idea of the (religious/non-religious) Cult, as well as the Motorcycle Club (M.C.), has spread far and wide. Last year, we reviewed a show titled “Mayan M.C.” about an American Motorcycle Club, the so-called outlaw. This year, far away in Iceland, this show introduced us to Icelandic & Danish Motorcycle (MC) Clubs. The hooliganism and the drug trade are the common traits of these Motorcycle clubs. As a result, their illegal activities cause law and order complications. Both the “Religious Cult” as well as the “Motorcycle Club” are claiming a piece of valuable property as their own, in this show.

Naturally, the tension between the two competing interests is high. Most likely, the land dispute is behind the said murder investigation case. Adding to the complication in the murder case is the involvement of the Motorcycle Club. And is this murder case linked to the cold case of a woman who mysteriously disappeared in 2013? So, in this season, both the police officials – Andri (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) and Hinrika (Ilmur Kristjánsdóttir) delve into the investigation of a cult member’s murder. It is an intriguing watch, as Andri and Hinrika search for the complicated truth.

What did we like about it?

To be honest, the character arcs of both Andri (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) and Hinrika (Ilmur Kristjánsdóttir) are quite interesting in this season. One of them grows as a person and becomes a respectable police official in the community. While the other one becomes erratic, makes mistakes and pays a high price. Maybe the issues in their personal lives have inadvertently affected their professional lives. Although the script of this season could not match the high standards set by the previous two seasons, still it is of fairly good quality. And the entire ensemble cast has done well in it.

The conclusion

With only six episodes in this show, it was perfect for the marathon watch this weekend. With a bunch of murder suspects, this slow-burning crime drama was another engaging Nordic Noir. Its suspense kept us hooked right till the end. The peek into human behaviour, the cult and the motorcycle was engrossing. We were heartbroken when a murderer killed a close friend of Andri and Hinrika in the second season of the “Trapped” show. Similarly, the ending of the “Entrapped” show broke our hearts. But we understand and appreciate the surprising twist at the end.

To err is human. And it is human folly to get entrapped. So, go ahead, admire the beauty of Iceland, wonder about human behaviour and watch this Nordic crime show that brings it all together stylishly.
