Mayor Of Kingstown (S3/2024/USA) Series Review

Mayor Of Kingstown (S3/2024) series takes lawlessness to another level in this latest season. With gangs of all hues, making their presence felt, once again, anarchy breaks out in this chaotic Kingstown. Therefore, the so-called Mayor works hard to establish law and order.

Our previous article about the ‘Mayor Of Kingstown‘ (S1 & S2) Series mentioned that its tale is set in the fictional town of Kingstown, Michigan. The series co-creator Hugh Dillon disclosed that the inspiration for Kingstown, Michigan (USA), comes from Kingston, Ontario (Canada), where he spent his childhood. At its height, Kingston town housed ten prisons, and it continues to be one of the most densely populated prison towns in Canada. It is worth mentioning, that many of the sequences featuring the prison yard and outside shots were filmed at the iconic Kingston Penitentiary, located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

‘Mayor Of Kingstown’ (S3) – Jeremy Renner Is Back As A Smart Fixer & Once Again He Shines Bright

Spoiler Free Review: Mayor Of Kingstown (S3/2024) Series

The synopsis/summary

Kingstown, Michigan, is depicted as a fictional company town where the primary industry is incarceration. The McLusky family has been instrumental in preserving peace for many years, functioning as mediators among the various factions, including street gangs, prisoners, correctional officers, and police. The series explores significant issues such as systemic racism, corruption, and inequality, presenting a stark portrayal of their struggle to impose order and justice in a town devoid of both.

In season (S3) three, Kingstown experiences a tumultuous series of explosions that unsettle its populace, coinciding with the arrival of a new faction of the Russian mob in the city, which intensifies a drug war that spans both prison and the outside world. Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) is compelled to bring an end to the violence, yet the challenge escalates when a familiar face from his past imprisonment threatens to undermine the Mayor’s efforts to ensure reconciliation among the competing groups.

A thought-provoking tale

‘Mayor Of Kingstown’ paints a bleak and hopeless picture of a society, where governance by the local government has completely failed and broken down. The thin line dividing the criminals of organized crimes and the members of the law enforcement agencies (Police, Prison, Judicial and Others) has vanished completely. There are no clear-cut black-and-white characters in it. With a few exceptions, almost all the characters live and operate in the grey areas. No wonder, the chaos and turmoil reign supreme in this thought-provoking tale.

Set against this kind of tragic backdrop, the hero Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) works very hard to maintain a semblance of peace and harmony. But then, it is a thankless job for him, with many added risks associated with the same. For Mike, is this job worth it, you tell us?

Wonderful to see Jeremy Renner finally back in action

In January month of the year 2023, we read about the horrible accident involving Jeremy Renner, and it was shocking, to say the least. We learnt that Jeremy was crushed by a snowplough as he tried to save his nephew from injury. Now, thankfully, he is back in the saddle. It was wonderful to watch Jeremy Renner play the lead character of Mike McLusky (the unofficial mayor and the skilled problem-fixer) in his unique style. The intense role of protagonist Mike is a demanding one. And, Jeremy does perform the balancing act of Mike, almost perfectly. For us, it is hard for us to imagine, any other actor portraying Mike, as well as he does. The rest of the ensemble cast has also performed well in this dark and merciless drama.

As Mike McLusky, Jeremy Renner is finally back in the saddle, firmly. Hopefully, Mike McLusky will be able to ride off into the sunset. But, given the grey characterization of Mike, it is hard for us to imagine a satisfactory ending for him in this grim tale. Especially, when quite a few important characters have met their demise in season (S3) three. Wish, we could tell you more about the deaths of key characters, but that might spoil your viewing pleasure.

The conclusion

As a viewer, one can never know, what is going to come in the upcoming season (S4) four. And, we can hope that besides the various challenges and personal crises (and losses), Mike will manage to find a little bit of calm and happiness.

Mayor Of Kingstown is a fast-paced thrilling crime mystery. It boasts of a smart storyline as well as good performances by its cast members. The tragic and cliffhanger ending of the third season finale was suitable. Now, we are compelled to wait for its next season.
