Brief Plotline

The “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” (AKOTSK) series depicts a heart-warming fantasy tale.

For a change, the story moved away from the Kings, Queens, Lords, Ladies, other Highborn, Dragons, and Thrones.

Instead, we meet a commoner, Dunk (Peter Claffey), an orphan who has led a tough life so far. Born in a tough feudal era, the tall man simply wishes to move up in his life. So, his sole aim and ambition in life is to become an honourable *Knight. And, he is willing to participate in a deadly duel for the same.

*Knights, referred to as "Ser," are distinguished, non-hereditary warriors in the feudal hierarchy, typically pledged to noble families to offer military service, safeguard, and uphold the law.

These Knights functioned as armoured cavalry during conflicts, champions in competitions, and masters-at-arms, occupying a social position that lies between lords and commoners.

Then, in the first six minutes of the first episode itself, Dunk meets the charming kid, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), who wishes to become his **squire. It seems that the young boy, Egg, has been hiding his identity, not only from the Dunk but others.

A **squire is a young man, generally of noble descent, who serves a knight, lord, or high-ranking warrior in the capacity of an apprentice, to eventually become a knight.

These squires fulfilled their roles as personal aides, attendants, and bearers of armour, executing responsibilities that are vital for a knight’s performance in battles or tournaments.

Despite the initial hiccups in their relationship, both of them, Dunk and Egg, manage to forge a strong and beautiful bond. Furthermore, they take necessary steps to reach their respective goals in their life. We loved this adventurous and dramatic tale about their various adventures.

What’s Good?

⚔︎⛊ Both the show creators, George R.R. Martin and Ira Parker, have painstakingly re-created the fantasy world and the characters as described in the fan-favourite “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” book. They deserve all the plaudits coming their way.

⚔︎⛊ Also, lead actors, Peter Claffey (Ser Duncan ‘Dunk’ the Tall) and Dexter Sol Ansell (Egg), have really looked natural in their respective roles. They belong to and come from two contrasting worlds, yet they gel well. Honestly, we really loved their on-screen enactment of these two lovable characters.

⚔︎⛊ These two people, a young man, Dunk and a kid, Egg, share a heartening relationship on-screen. Their association is not one-dimensional; there are many more facets and layers to it. It is a saga about finding yourself as well as discovering the world of the nine kingdoms of the realm named below.

(1) Crownlands, (2) Westerlands, (3) Stromlands, (4) Riverlands, (5) Iron Islands, (6) the North, (7) the Reach, (8) the Vale of Arryn, & (9) Dorne.

⚔︎⛊ Among the supporting cast, we liked the performances of Daniel Ings, Shaun Thomas, Danny Webb, Finn Bennett, Tanzyn Crawford, Rowan Robinson, Sam Spruell, and others. Although, to be honest, they did not have much to do.

⚔︎⛊ Not to forget, the music, the cinematography, and the other production values are top class. The trial of seven scenes in Episode 5 was really immersive and impactful. That scene clearly defined and etched out the real personalities of all the characters in the show. And marked the path ahead for the duo.

Conclusion

Season 1 of the “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” series narrates a fascinating imaginary tale. In this fantasy tale, the structure of feudal society is distinctly hierarchical, with highborn nobles controlling power, land, and inherited titles, while the lowborn, or smallfolk, represent the common populace that toils on the land. Nobles benefit from enhanced lifestyles and social prestige, while commoners experience limited opportunities for upward mobility and often endure the harshest consequences in times of war. Given this kind of backdrop, one of the lead characters is a highborn, while the other is a lowborn orphan.

Yet, their contrasting worlds collide. And that leads to a riveting and engrossing daredevil tale of two people, Dunk and Egg. With only 6 episodes, now, one could try to binge-watch this fan-favourite and highly rated “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” series at one go. So, go ahead and watch. And enjoy.
