Greedy People movie narrates crime tales about regular people participating in criminal activities. And as usual, they are driven by uncontrollable greed and selfishness.
Interestingly, this movie was initially titled “The Problem with Providence”. However, the title “Greedy People” is apt and more suitable for its quirky story.

The synopsis/summary
It is a dark humorous crime thriller, wherein, the novice officer Will (Himesh Patel) and his unconventional partner Terry (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) disrupt their quaint island community when they inadvertently stumble upon one million dollars at a crime scene they created. After making the reckless decision to take the money (1 USD million), the town’s eccentric residents become embroiled in a restless pursuit for cash — including a pregnant mother Paige (Lily James), a masseur Keith (Simon Rex), and a shrimp company proprietor Wallace (Tim Blake Nelson) — revealing the lengths to which they will go for the allure of money.
The location for filming was Southport, North Carolina, with the schedule running from May 9 to June 11, 2022.

It reminded us of the Coen Brothers’ movies
Honestly, this crime drama written by Mike Vukadinovich and directed by Potsy Ponciroli did remind us of some of the famous crime movies made by the Coen Brothers.
Coen brothers are filmmakers known for their stylish neo-noir films that combine elements of comedy and drama and often centre on eccentric characters and convoluted plots. (~Britannica)
Although, we have seen quite a few films made by Coen Brothers - Fargo (1996), The Big Lebowski (1998), Intolerable Cruelty (2003), True Grit (2010), etc.
We have reviewed only this Coen Brothers film here - No Country For Old Men (2007).
And interestingly, their original Fargo movie has inspired a series of the same name, in fact we also reviewed the latest Fargo (S5/2024) Series here.
We picked this film to watch, because, we have seen the ‘Old Henry’ (2021) movie directed by Potsy Ponciroli and we liked that. And when we mention the Coen Brothers and their typical crime movies (we have mentioned a couple of them here), we must caution our readers that Potsy’s movie fails to reach the heights of the Coen Brothers’ movies.
Himesh & Joseph lead the talented ensemble cast
We have seen the buddy-cops movie Bad Boys – Ride or Die (2024), recently. Now, unlike that action-packed film, this ‘Greedy People’ film boasts of an unusual pairing of Himesh Patel (Will) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Terry) in the lead roles. They start as the so-called buddy cops with positive vibes. The chance discovery of Million Dollar drives not only these two cops but also other people living in that small port town to participate in horrific criminal activities.
Himesh Patel and Lily James shared the screen together in the Yesterday (2019) movie, which we liked because of its interesting take on The Beatles by director Danny Boyle.
The actress Lily James (Paige) plays the heavily pregnant wife of Himesh Patel (Will), who also makes some strange choices because of her greed. However, she is not alone, the other greedy folks include – Tim Blake Nelson (Wallace), Simon Rex (Keith), Nina Arianda (Deborah), Jim Gaffigan (The Irishman), José María Yazpik (The Colombian), etc. Not to forget, we last saw actress Uzo in the “Orange Is the New Black” (2013-2019) series, so it was wonderful to see actress Uzo Aduba (Murphy) in this film. We liked the entire ensemble cast, they played their roles well and made it an entertaining film.
The conclusion
A chain of misguided decisions ultimately destabilizes the previously serene community. And after a couple of shocking scenes, the story moved along the predictable lines. Many of us have seen such tragic events happening in many movies. No doubt, the insatiable greed for money makes the world go round. Thankfully, some folks maintain their sanity.
