Screenplay based on Harlan Coben’s mystery novel

This five-part limited series is inspired by Harlan Coben’s successful 2014 novel of the same title. However, in this series, its creators have moved the setting of the story from New York City (USA) to Manchester (UK). The story follows police detective Kat Donovan (Rosalind Eleazar) as she revisits the intricate mystery surrounding the murder of her father, Clint Donovan. As we expected, the story follows the typical trajectory of Harlan Coben’s novel storyline that we have seen in his series including the “Fool Me Once” (2024) show.

While carrying out the two parallel investigations, police detective Kat Donovan comes across quite a few shocking surprises and revelations. To add an extra layer of mystery to its main plotline, a parallel crime subplot is introduced in the show. So, we get to see a cruel and sinister side of modern-day crime driven purely by insatiable greed. To be honest, somehow we could predict what was going to happen, on most occasions.

Manchester Police Detective Kat Donovan is the lead character

Manchester Police Detective Kat Donovan is the protagonist of this suspense drama. In other words, Rosalind Eleazar plays the lead role and carries the show admirably. It is interesting to note, that almost all the characters are hiding a key piece of truth from Kat, viz., her mother, her friends, and her colleagues in the police. Therefore, her needle of suspicion tends to point her towards her near and dear ones. Unable to live like this, Kat decides to seek the unpalatable truth about the mysterious murder of her father. The rest of the characters played their parts well in keeping the shocking secrets and revealing them, one piece at a time.

About the Actors’ (Males & Females) performances

We liked the performances of Rosalind Eleazar (Kat Donovan), Richard Armitage (Ellis Stagger), Mary Malone (Aqua Vanech), Steve Pemberton (Titus), etc. The rest of the ensemble cast played their parts well too. With each character (actors) holding a key piece of the puzzle (murder case), we enjoyed watching them.

Noticeably, this will be the fourth instance of a Harlan Coben novel being adapted, with Richard Armitage prominently featured. In this series, he did try hard to become a suspicious character. Also, it was fun to watch Steve Pemberton play the negative role after we saw him in the dark comedy “The Cleaner” (S3/2024) Series, not so long ago.

The conclusion

Missing You was a fairly decent show to watch on the 2025 New Year’s first day. With only five episodes, perhaps it is the perfect show for a marathon (binge) watch in cold winter.
