The synopsis

Helen Webb (Keira Knightley) is a devoted wife, loving mother and professional spy. For almost a decade-long period, she has been sharing her politician husband’s confidential information with the clandestine group known as the Black Doves. Moreover, Helen enters into an intense and passionate affair with Jason (Andrew Koji) who remains oblivious to her hidden identity. Then, on one of those cold winter nights, her lover is caught in the crosshairs and falls prey to the targeted murder.

So, in the wake of Jason’s (Andrew Koji) assassination, Helen’s spymaster, the elusive Reed (Sarah Lancashire), calls upon her longtime friend Sam (Ben Whishaw) to safeguard her. Notably, Sam is an old assassin friend of Helen, who joins her on a journey for truth and retribution. The combined efforts of Helen and Sam lead to the revelation of a substantial conspiracy. Curiously that assassination plot intricately connects the hidden facets of London’s underworld to an approaching geopolitical crisis.

Geopolitically, Chinese have relaced Russians in the contemporary Western (USA & UK) Scripts. So, Chinese have become their topmost threat.

Now, let us meet these three main characters

Helen

Employed by a private espionage company, Helen, known as the Black Dove, is involved in the illicit acquisition of secrets from her politician husband, which she shares with her employers. Although she presents a façade of domesticity with her twins, Oliver and Jacqueline, her life is anything but ordinary. The assassination of her secret lover, Jason, by a sniper at a distance drives her to pursue the truth about his death and the motivations behind it.

Reed

In the hierarchy of the Black Doves, Reed functions as Helen’s handler and intermittently oversees Sam. This enigmatic figure acts as the puppet master, perpetually outmanoeuvring others. Like Helen, Reed possesses a distorted moral compass, driven by the pursuit of profit through the sale of secrets to the highest bidder, irrespective of their ethical implications.

We remember watching this actress Sarah Lancashire superbly playing the protagonist in the "Happy Valley" (S3/2023) Series.
Sam

Sam is a contract killer and a proficient triggerman. So, he is a lethal and lonely professional assassin. The killing job seems to come naturally to him, yet it disturbs him on a deeper level. He lives on the edge, harbouring a secret longing for the unattainable because of his risky job. Even then, he desire marriage and a settled life.

Inspired by the real spy cops scandal in the UK

This series is based on a real scandal that took place in London over many years, the consequences of which are still unfolding. So, the inspiration for this series comes from the spy cop scandal in Britain, but it does not explicitly reflect those events. The show creator Joe Barton stated that the reality was “remarkably horrific” and “much darker than” what is shown in this recent series, which we believe is an accurate claim.

I had been reading about those spy cops, those guys, and [how] they infiltrated that environmental group and ended up having children with [some people],”… “That idea, that duplicitousness of having a pretend marriage lasting years and years and years and then it’s disappeared. That was really part of, I think, the inspiration for it as well.”

Joe Barton | Radio Times

So, we liked the neatly packaged story of this series

We liked the fast-paced storytelling of this new kind of spy thriller. One more aspect that we admire is the fact that it is wrapped in mystery and suspense. Also, there are enough twists and turns to keep us deeply engaged in this series. More so, when we see a private espionage agency named “Black Doves” deeply embedded in the British political and bureaucratic system. Is it possible in real life? Probably not. But then what do we know?

An unusual pairing of Keira Knightley & Ben Whishaw worked well

In this espionage series, Keira Knightley (Helen Webb) is in trouble and Ben Whishaw (Sam Young) comes as a proverbial knight in shining armour. Their unusual pairing worked like a charm for the viewers. Bouncing off each others’ energy, both of them gelled very well in this modern buddy-action comedy. The tale of their strong bond and deep friendship won our hearts too. Now, for us, it is difficult to choose, who was the better performer.

As usual, Sarah Lancashire (Reed) played her part in her unique subtle way. However, given the limitations of the script, she did not have much to do in season one. Hopefully, the viewers will get to see more of her in future. The rest of the ensemble cast members played their parts well too. Not to forget, their British humour always comes through to add fun and humour to this action drama.

The conclusion

We enjoyed this thrilling spy tale. With only six episodes in season one, it is a perfect show for the marathon (binge) watch in the Christmas holiday season. We loved the Black Doves.
