Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies) find their liberty and empowerment in this movie. The feminine gaze and the rural milieu add to this delightful satire, as a welcome change.
Kiran Rao makes a comeback to directing after a gap of thirteen years since her last film, Dhobhighat, in 2011. Her latest film is a charming and heartening film about Indian women.

The introduction
Taking place in Madhya Pradesh, the heartland of India, this Hindi comedy-drama follows the escapades of two young brides {Phool (Nitanshi Goel) & Jaya (Pratibha Ranta), who lose their way after disembarking from the same train. The ensuing commotion is a mix of comedy and poignancy, triggering a series of unexpected occurrences that propel them on a journey of profound revelation, delving into their own identities, womanhood, and the meaning of life. Please note that we are not sharing any further details about its storyline, as it might ruin your viewing pleasure.
Its tale focuses on the rural milieu and the women folks, primarily
This movie is another nostalgia trip into the recent past. It transports us back to India in 2001 when the pan-India mobile telecom revolution was in its initial stage. The mobile towers were still making their presence felt in the rural areas. Neither social media platforms nor smartphones were invented in those simpler times. In a way, simplicity, innocence, conservative values and patriarchy still dominated India and Indian society.
But on the flip side, two decades ago, the women folks of India were still finding their feet as working and ambitious career women. It was especially true for the Ladies who used to live in villages across India. Many of them used to believe in arranged marriage customs, the dowry system, and the use of a long veil (घूँघट/Ghoonghat) to cover their faces. Education was still at the lower level, especially among the rural women folks.
Smart script, funny satire, tight direction and stellar acting performances
In addition to its smart script, funny satire, and tight direction, we also liked the soft romantic musical numbers of this Hindi film. We have shared the videos of the songs below.
According to the IMDb, Aamir Khan had auditioned for character of Ravi Kishan. But felt that Ravi Kishan could do better then him. We agree.
Except for impactful actor Ravi Kishan (Inspector Manohar-top right), the majority of the ensemble cast members are new to us. But all of them perfectly recreated the rustic landscape of India with their stellar acting performances. Young actors like, Pratibha Ranta (Jaya-bottom right), Sparsh Srivastav (Deepak-top left), Nitanshi Goel (Phool-bottom left), and their friends have enchanted us with their acts.
The conclusion
This film has stylishly used subtle and not-so-subtle satire on the deeply ingrained (conservative) Indian way of thinking to deliver quite a few important social messages. To sum up, we reiterate that we fell in love with the storytelling, humour, performances, and social messages in this wonderful film.
So, go ahead, watch the “Laapataa Ladies” film on the big screen in a movie hall near you and support good and intelligent cinema in India.
