‘Love Lies Bleeding’ is a romantic crime thriller set in the rugged terrain of New Mexico in the United States of America. There are a lot of lies, deceptions, fights and bleeding in this film set in 1989; as its apt title suggests.
It primarily focuses on the love story between Lou (Kristen Stewart) and Jackie (Katy O’Brian). They are two strong-willed and independent-minded women, however, they find it difficult to escape the brutal crime world.

The introduction – storyline/plotline
As the famous saying goes – opposites attract in a relationship. And this is exactly what we are shown in this thrilling love story. Feminine Lou (Kristen Stewart) and muscular Jackie (Katy O’Brian) meet each other and fall in love. But their life and love story are not as simple. Lou belongs to a crime lord family in New Mexico, where the patriarch Lou Senior (Ed Harris) dominates. So, can Lou escape her fate? And can love bloom in a harsh desert terrain and the world of crime?
It is quite fascinating that the romantic tale takes place in 1989, coincidentally the year actress Katy O'Brian came into the world. Similar to her on-screen persona Jackie, Katy O'Brian had a background in competitive bodybuilding. Katy O'Brian stumbled upon her character's role on social media after a fan shared a casting call for a queer bodybuilder with her.
What did we like in the film?
Both writers – Rose Glass and Weronika Tofilska have presented us with a simple love story between two women. But to add a few twists and turns to their romantic tale, these writers have added the grim family realities and the nasty criminal circumstances to mix. No doubt, both of them pose serious hurdles in their budding romance. There are quite a few surprising elements in its story. And we liked that. Also, Rose Glass as a director has woven and depicted an intricate and passionate love tale.
As usual, Kristen Stewart plays the vulnerable yet mentally strong character of Lou with a lot of sensitivity. Katy O’Brian was equally good while portraying the character of a big body-builder Jackie, who falls head over heels in love with Lou. Then there are two shady male characters Lou Senior and JJ, these two crude and violent criminals have been depicted well by the actors – Ed Harris and Dave Franco, respectively.
What did we not like in this film?
The slow-burning pace of this mysterious thriller was a kind of turn-off for us. While watching it, sometimes, we wished this film to pick up the pace. But that did not happen. Still, we carried on.
Then, we also did not like the surprising twist in the end scene. Perhaps, some people cannot escape their criminal behaviour. Or maybe, some people are willing to go the extra mile to get what they want. And if it means telling lies and murdering folks, only then does one get to spend the life with the people whom you love, then such persons will do it. Possibly, to get the elusive freedom in life, people have to do the unthinkable.
The conclusion
We picked up this film to watch because of Kristen Stewart and thankfully, we were not disappointed. The writer and director Rose Glass adds another well-made film to her body of work. All is well that ends well. Alright.
