FM Rating3.25/5
FM Short CommentsThe talented ensemble cast of this murder mystery film attracted us, but somehow, it did not click with us. The tardy pace of the script and the taken-for-granted (the chalta hai) attitude of the director and actors did not make it a highly entertaining film. It is another time-pass suspense Hindi film.

The introduction

An unconventional law enforcement officer Assistant Commissioner of Police/ACP Bhavani Singh (Pankaj Tripathi) and his junior Sub-Inspector/SI Padam Kumar (Priyank Tiwari) shed light on a diverse group of potential murderers in the homicide investigation. As an outsider, Bhavani immerses himself in the realm of the prestigious Royal Delhi Club (RDC), in Delhi. Soon enough, he discovered that appearances can be deceiving, and there lies a web of hidden secrets among the suspects.

The storyline

The tragic demise of a handsome fitness instructor was initially presumed to be a bizarre mishap. The club members thought that he was tragically suffocated beneath a heavily burdened barbell at the club. Incidentally, it happened on the eve of the elections in the club. Gradually the events unveiled a chilling truth. It becomes evident that among the privileged elite members, known for their opulent lifestyles, lurks a ruthless murderer(s).

ACP Bhavani Singh, a Crime Branch veteran was appointed to investigate the complex case. Two club members, Bambi Todi (Sara Ali Khan) and Akash Dogra (Vijay Varma) began to assist the ACT in this case. Together, they embark on a mission to unravel a seemingly straightforward murder crime. Soon enough, they start to uncover the intricate confidential secrets of various club members.

A note about its meandering script

It was a great idea to use the “RDC (club)” as a symbol of privilege and classism in Delhi, India. Also, the inherent entitlement of wealthy people has been displayed intelligently. Furthermore, the exploitation of the underprivileged class in the club was depicted smartly. No doubt, it has good source material in a layered novel, but it failed to turn it into a tight and coherent film.

In our humble opinion, the filmmaker Homi tried to combine the two distinct genres into one film, viz., a satire and a whodunit. However, it failed to generate excitement in both genres. We think one should never sail on two boats. Sadly, the film did not rise to the occasion. It was neither a funny comedy nor a gripping murder mystery.

A good ensemble cast but…

Besides, we did not like the use of distinct words to describe the various key characters during the casting – Tharki (Lecherous), Nasheri (Junkie), Fekuchand (Show-off), Bechara (Pitiable), Bakchod (Bullshitter), Vidhwa (Widow), etc. They killed off the suspense right at the beginning. The classic Show versus Tell!? We think that did not help the film as a whole.

And all of these were despite its wonderful set of actors. However, despite some of the negative aspects, we loved the ensemble cast of this film. It boasts of some of the wonderfully talented Indian actors and actresses, especially, Pankaj Tripathi (Bhawani Singh), Vijay Varma (Aakash Dogra), Karisma Kapoor (Shehnaz Noorani), Sanjay Kapoor (Ranvijay Singh), Priyank Tiwari (Padam Kumar), Brijendra Kala (Guppie Ram), Dimple Kapadia (Cookie Katoch), etc. But, some of their performances were not up to the mark. We do not know, who to blame – actor or director?

The conclusion

On the other hand, the unconventional investigating team of Pankaj and Priyank held the mystery together with their unusual detective style. Maybe, given these accomplished names, we had pretty high hopes for this film. Still, it is a decent watch, not a great watch. If you have time to kill, then go ahead and watch this slow-burning murder mystery with classism as a hidden and unnoticeable backdrop.

Spoilers Alert – Murder Suspense & Ending Explained

How does ACP investigate the murder of the gym trainer?

Leo Matthews

The dead body of Leo Matthews (Aashim Gulati), a fitness trainer at the club, was discovered in the gymnasium, right at the beginning of the film. This led Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Bhavani Singh and sub-inspector (SI) Padam Kumar to initiate an investigation into the murder.

Lies, deceits, theft, blackmail, extortion, drugs, murders, etc.

Herein by investigating and talking to all the murder suspects they gradually uncovered the true nature of several club members. ACP finds herself unravelling one sordid secret after another following Leo’s demise. As they delve deeper, they stumble upon club members who merely masqueraded as part of the ultra-wealthy elite, a scandal involving blackmail, and the presence of drug addictions.

Who were the other persons killed?

Guppie Ram

While the ACP and SI were conducting their murder investigation within a tight deadline of 10 days, suddenly, the situation intensified rapidly. Two more dead bodies – Guppie Ram (Brijendra Kala ) and Anshul Nayyar (Varun Mitra) turned up. It forced ACP to urgently identify the true identity of the murderer(s) in these cases.

Anshul Nayyar

ACP found that Guppie, another murder victim, had once tried to dissolve the bones of a skeleton buried beneath a garden while pretending to water the plants. Initially, some club members suspect that the missing husband of the maid, Ganga, named Ajay Kumar (who used to provide drugs at the club and mistreated Ganga), could be another murder victim, but Padam eventually locates him alive. Following the DNA analysis results, Bhavani uncovers that the skeleton belongs to Anshul, who was married to Bambi, a rich club member who fell in love with a poor club employee.

So, who was the murderer?

Bambi Todi

Bhavani initially tried to pin all three murders on Yash Batra (Suhail Nayyar), alleging that Yash had been covertly filming Bambi and killed Anshul due to jealousy over his relationship with her. Later on, ACP shifted the blame to Aakash Dogra (Vijay Varma) for the murders. This fabricated narrative ultimately compelled Bambi Todi (Sara Ali Khan) to admit to her crimes. So, she confessed to being the actual perpetrator of these murders, leading to her arrest by the police following her admission of guilt.
