AIR – the 2023 movie illustrates is truly inspiring sports and business tale for all budding entrepreneurs. It chronicles the collaboration of two of the biggest names in the sporting arena and the business world.
These two well-known names are the basketball legend Michael Jordan (MJ) and the top business brand Nike.
In this film, Nike employee Sonny Vaccaro (splendidly played by Matt Damon) brought both MJ and Nike together, and as they say, their business partnership is a slice of sporting/business folklore.

The screenplay of this movie was selected as the Best Unproduced/Blacklist Screenplay of 2021. Then this script was originally optioned by the independent film company Mandalay Pictures. At a later date, its script landed with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who then made changes and rewrote Alex Convery's screenplay. Soon after they joined hands with Amazon Studios to make this positive movie with a great star cast backed by a good screenplay.

The opening scene of this movie takes you back on a nostalgia trip with its well-placed news clippings and the popular music of that year in the 1980s. And from then on, I was hooked and looking forward to watching this optimistic film with an uplifting sports/business story. You know, the life of any budding entrepreneur is always about balancing the ‘Risk’ and ‘Reward’ payoffs. Identifying business opportunities and making the right moves.
So, it becomes a ‘Win-Win’ option for the key persons involved in the deal.
It is a real-life story about how both MJ and Nike became a team with an equitable and profitable deal, worth millions of dollars in business. And I loved both the characters – Mama Deloris Jordan (Viola Davis) as a bright lady and Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) as a sunny gentleman that all of us want to be in this life. I enjoyed the dramatic pace of the movie along with its amazing ensemble of actors.
This movie certainly is a heartening and uplifting tale of the bygone era, a piece of history, worth watching at least once.

I am sharing a moving and very well-written monologue (Nike’s sales pitch) delivered by Matt Damon (as Sonny Vaccaro) in this film, although its text seems lengthy in the movies, this monologue takes only a couple of minutes. This is one lengthy monologue for an actor to deliver. And here is the link to the video of the said scene on YouTube, in case you wish to check that out.
Forget about the shoes, forget about the money. You’re going to make enough money, it’s not going to matter. Money can buy you almost anything, it can’t buy you immortality. That, you have to earn. I’m going to look you in the eyes and I’m gonna tell you the future. You were cut from your high school basketball team. You willed your way to the NBA. You’re gonna win championships.
Sonny Vaccaro addressed Michael Jordan, while pitching Nike shoes in the AIR film.
It’s an American story, and that’s why Americans are gonna love it. People are going to build you up, and God are they going to, because when you’re great and new, we love you. Man, we’ll build you up into something that doesn’t even exist. You’re going to change the fucking world. But you know what?
Once they’ve built you as high as they possibly can, they’re gonna tear you back down – it’s the most predictable pattern. We build you into something that doesn’t exist, and that means you have to try to be that thing all day, every day. That’s how it works. And we do it again, and again, and again.
And I’m going to tell you the truth. You’re going to be attacked, betrayed, exposed and humiliated. And you’d survive that. A lot of people can climb that mountain. It’s the way down that breaks them, ’cause that’s the moment when you are truly alone. And what would you do then? Can you summon the will to fight on, through all the pain, and rise again? You know, Matt Damon had originally written the screenplay of Good Will Hunting for an English class at Harvard University. Years later the screenplay was made into a classic movie called “Good Will Hunting” 1997 movie. The movie was nominated for 9 Academy Awards, and it won the 1998 Oscar – Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen Best Original Screenplay for both Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. And, therefore, it will be interesting to see the fate of the AIR 2023 movies in upcoming various awards ceremonies.
