Gomorrah is an Italian-language crime drama series that explores the deadly world of the infamous Italian Mafia-type criminal organization. Gomorrah means any place notorious for vice and depravity.
This show is based on the international bestseller Gomorrah penned by Roberto Saviano, who was forced into hiding after the book’s publication. Some people in the Camorra were unhappy with his book exposing their secret world of bloody crime. So, it narrates the story of the Camorra – a clandestine society organized in about 1820 in Naples, which thrives on blackmail and extortion.
Nowadays, this modern-day organized crime gang is popularly known as the Italian Mafia.

Focus:- Roberto Saviano’s ‘Gomorrah’ book
As we have informed you in the first paragraph itself, this series is based on Roberto Saviano’s book ‘Gomorrah‘. Well, because of the popularity of this book, his life came under inevitable risk from the gang members of the Italian Mafia. So, he has been compelled to live under 24-hour armed police protection for the last decade. In this series based on his book, one will find quite a few characters based on real-life Mafia leaders. For instance,
- Don Pietro’s character was inspired by real-life crime boss Raffaele Cutolo (1941-2021) – the leader of the Nuova Camorra Organizzata, as he renewed the Camorra group. Also, Pietro’s wife has the same name as Cutolo’s wife – Immacolata.
- Genny Savastano’s character was based on real-life crime boss Cosimo di Lauro (1973-2012) – an Italian Camorrista and the acting boss of the Di Lauro clan from Naples.
So, one can say that this series is inspired by true-life characters linked to the Mafia world of Italy.
