Mast Mein Rehne Ka narrates a poignant love drama about ordinary folks in Mumbai. These two contemporary love stories are too good. They touch heart and soul with simple yarn.

The first story is about an older widow and widower, who find love in the autumn of their life. Meanwhile, the second story bonds together two youngsters, a hustler and a thief.

The introduction

There are two sets of parallel stories of love and companionship in this film. In a way, this film tries to answer a philosophical question about how one should lead life. The answer is simple – one should live life in fun (Mast Mein Rehne Ka). Or else, life will be difficult and worrisome for the people.

The first love story

The main story is about two older (late 65s & 75s years old) and lonely people who re-discover affection and friendship once again in their lives. Both the widower Kamath (Jackie Shroff) and the widow Mrs Handa (Neena Gupta – we last saw her in the Lust Stories 2 film) are living alone in the big bad city of Mumbai. This is a tale about the tale of middle-class people. And in a way, it is a story about society and the city, where ordinary people do not have time to socialise. Most do not even know their immediate neighbours. Naturally, the loneliness creeps in, even in a city of millions plus.

Both the senior actors Jackie Shroff and Neena Gupta looked natural. They have managed to convey the central theme and ideas of this modern fable with their engrossing acting.

The second love story

The key character of the other love story is a hustler Rawas (Monika Panwar), who is smart and a survivor in the concrete jungle of Mumbai. She is a professional beggar, who begs at one of the busy traffic signals of this mega city. The other important character in this love story is a thief Nanhe (Abhishek Chauhan), who just wants to earn enough money to buy a decent place to live in this expensive Mumbai. Although Nanhe is a ladies’ tailor, he does all sorts of part-time jobs. He is also a thief, who targets lonely older folks.

How many times, we have met and/or passed similar characters in our lives? While we simply drive by them. Perhaps, because they are poor and weak. Most of these people are considered invisible in society. More so in the commercial cinematic world. But, they are poverty-stricken but real people. So, we were pleasantly surprised by this sensitive love tale. Again, both the actors Monika Panwar and Abhishek Chauhan have done an excellent act to portray these two challenging characters. We loved their captivating acting in it.

The conclusion

It is not very often we get to see such a realistic drama in Hindi movies. It raises quite a few pertinent questions about our society in general and the ordinary folks in particular. This movie has rightly focussed on the people living on the margins. The people who are not considered important. Still, their lives and their stories are important.

Kudos to its writers Vijay Maurya and Payal Arora for writing a sensitive and realistic tale. Also, the direction by Vijay is good and insightful. Special mention must be made for Rakhi Sawant (Bilkis), who has charmed us with her usual acting. The music and songs are great too, especially the ‘Kabhi-Kabhi’ song in it. It is one of the most touching love stories of the year from India. We loved its ending. And we hope that they all live happily ever after barring the few usual hiccups in life. No doubt, it is a good movie to watch on any given day.

Life mein masti mein rahne ka, okay!

Have fun!
