Farzi is a 2023 Hindi language series from India, created and directed by Krishna D.K. and Raj Nidimoru. Its protagonist is a struggling artist Sunny (Shahid Kapoor) from the middle class, who blindly chases money.
He wishes to climb the wealth ladder and reach the super-rich class. In this serial, the middle class of India has been called the middle “finger” class to point out the rage, angst, pain and displeasure of this class in present-day India. Perhaps, this middle finger gesture has been used as a mark of protest or maybe it acts as a justification for the criminal activities of the anti-hero protagonist called the artist.

Sunny (Shahid Kapoor), a brilliant small-time artist is catapulted into the high-stakes world of counterfeiting when he creates the perfect fake currency note, even as Michael (Vijay Sethupathi), a fiery, unorthodox task force officer wants to rid the country of the counterfeiting menace. In this thrilling cat-and-mouse race, losing is not an option!

The title of the show is the “Farzi” (फ़र्ज़ी, فَرْض) word; which word has an Arabic origin and means fake, fictitious, counterfeit, not real, etc. It narrates the fictitious tale of false currencies/notes circulating in India.
Originally this series was planned as a movie with Shahid Kapoor and Nawazuddin Siddique. However, later on, it was transformed into a web series and then Vijay Sethupathi took Nawazuddin’s role. National Film Award winner Vijay Sthupathi is a versatile actor. He has acted in movies/series in various Indian languages. His popular movies are – Pizza (2012), Pannaiyarum Padminiyum (2014), Vikram Vedha (2017), 96 (2018), Super Deluxe (2019), etc.
It is the latest show from the writer and director duo Raj and DK; in the recent past, they have tasted success with The Family Man serial. It is a complex drama about two young underachievers – the artist (Shahid) and his childhood friend. Coming from the middle class of India, these youngsters always struggle in their lives to earn a sizeable income and lead a comfortable life, as their rich and wealthy friends do.
The artist and his childhood friend blame the prevalent “system” for their poor earnings and then they decide to change the rules of the “game” to fulfil their desires, dreams, goals and aspirations. However, to get rich quickly by any means necessary, both of them get involved in one of the biggest counterfeiting currency rackets in India.
On the other end of the spectrum are an honest officer (Vijay) and his dedicated team, who are willing to take all kinds of risks and steps to put an end to the circulation of fake notes in the economy. This is the first web series for both Shahid Kapoor and Vijay Sethupathi. Both these actors along with Kay Kay Menon, Raashii Khanna, Bhuvan Arora, and the rest of its cast have done a good job.
Backed by good writing and acting by its ensemble cast members, it is a good-paced crime thriller infused with good black comedy.
I restate that I liked this series and I look forward to its next season. Kindly allow me to make an educated guess. In its season(s), we might see Micheal (the officer) joining hands with Sunny (the artist) to take down the big boss(s) of counterfeiting currency rackets. And to hazard another guess about the future of “Farzi” and “The Family Man” series, we might see overlapping of their famous characters and spy stories in the future on a much grander scale, unlike the mere phone calls to each other by the officials.

Ormax Media conducted a survey that showed that Shahid Kapoor and Vijay Sethupathi’s series achieved a record viewership of 37.1 million in March 2023.
Thus this show became the most-watched Indian series of all time.
No doubt, the viewers loved the original storyline as well as the talented ensemble cast in this hit show.
