The introduction

As we have said this movie focuses its gaze on the subject 89P13 the Rocket Raccoon. In the past, he was genetically and cybernetically modified by the (H.E.) High Evolutionary. Thus H.E. gave the Rocket an enhanced intelligence and the ability to speak. But, on the other hand, H.E. inflicted a serious emotional and physical toll on him.

The High Evolutionary: YOU! You thought you could escape me? No!
[violently attacks Rocket Racoon]

The High Evolutionary: You think you have some worth in and of yourself without me? No! You're an abomination! Nothing more than a step on my path! You freakish little monster! How dare you think you are more, 8-9-P-1-3!

[Rocket Racoon frees himself and takes out his weapon]

Rocket: The name's Rocket. Rocket Raccoon.
(Spoilers Alert) Rocket Raccoon’s obsession with prosthetics

In Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) movies, we saw that Rocket Raccoon is obsessed with other people’s prosthetics.

Now, we meet Rocket’s friends from the High Evolutionary’s subject 89 cages (Lylla, Teefs, Floor and others) in this Vol. 3 movie.

Please note that the above fact was shared by James Gunn over Twitter (X).

Writer and director James Gunn explores the depth of Rocket Racoon’s character

We learnt that in this Marvel movie, Rocket Racoon is the character who James Gunn feels closest to. In fact, in many ways, it is the reason he signed on to these films in the first place.

Therefore, many of Rocket’s traits from other movies had their origin explained during the flashbacks in this volume. For example, his above-average intelligence and his great skill in piloting spacecraft. In the Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) movie, he was able to work out the escape plans. Also, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) movie, we see his weakness for small tech gadgets. And his compulsive behaviour led him to steal Anulax Batteries from the Sovereigns.

(Spoilers Alert) Rocket and his hi-tech gift to Nebula

Nebula has a new nanotech weave arm in this film, which was an upgrade made for her by Rocket. Director James Gunn confirmed Rocket made this arm for Nebula to thank her for gifting him Bucky’s detached vibranium arm in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022).

In short, this Marvel movie tale explores the exponential growth of Rocket’s character arc. His journey from an awkward subject of an experiment to a superhero is emotionally good.

“I wasn’t quite sure I wanted to do it, but I spent time thinking about the characters and their world saying it felt like “Bugs Bunny in the middle of the Avengers… I ultimately landed on the realization that Rocket was as unique and lonely a character as I would ever find, and the idea of exploring that made me say yes to the franchise…”

James Gunn | Film Director

The director James Gunn has woven a good story around his lovable character.

Other characters are well etched out too

Once again in this movie, the antagonists are the beloved band of misfit superheroes. You might notice that almost all of them look a bit lost, tired, sad, and forlorn these days. So, it seems that their unofficial leader Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is still hurting from the loss of Gamora. So, everyone must support him and pitch in whenever the situation demands.

No doubt, we loved the well-etched characters of Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Drax (Dave Bautista), Kraglin (Sean Gunn), Nebula (Karen Gillan), and others. All of these superheroes work as a team, not only to defend the universe but also to protect one of their friends. In case, they are unable to complete that mission successfully, then it might herald the demise of the Guardians as we know them.

The primary antagonist is The High Evolutionary played by actor Chukwudi Iwuji. The film director James Gunn has based him and his Counter-Earth on H.G. Wells’s dark sci-fi tale “The Island of Dr Moreau”. The fact is that James Gunn is a big fan of the old black-and-white movie – Island of Lost Souls of 1932, its screen adaptation.

(Spoilers Alert) About The High Evolutionary (H.E.) character

In the Marvel comics

The High Evolutionary/Herbert Windam is the ultimate geneticist in the Marvel comics continuity. He was first introduced in “The Mighty Thor (Vol. 1) #136” in 1966. More recently, he played a role in the “Annihilation Conquest” storyline from 2008 which these Guardians of the Galaxy movies are partly based on.

About H.E.

The H.E. is known for creating animal and human hybrids like the Ani-Men or the New-Men and having a fortress on Mt. Wundergore where Pietro and Wanda Maximoff spent some time as babies.

All of these characters have been played by well-known actors including voice artists. They have performed very well. We loved their roles in it, especially their humourous banters in it.

The conclusion

With this Guardian film, James Gunn has officially finished on a high indeed. This is his last of the Guardians film. With it, he has not only delivered a fan-favourite trilogy that entertained but also earned millions at the box office. Its credit scene in the end showed us the silver linings. Now, it seems that it is not the end of the road for the Guardians. And we liked this piece of news about the return of Star Lord’s character.

(Spoilers Alert) The fate of The High Evolutionary in this film

In this movie, we witness that The High Evolutionary is presumably killed when his ship is destroyed.

However, actor Chukwudi Iwuji (H.E.) noted in an interview that his character is never shown being killed. In the scene showing the Guardians evacuating the ship.

Besides, James Gunn also confirmed in a tweet (X) that the High Evolutionary is “Imprisoned in Knowhere.”

We loved this sci-fi film and now look forward to what comes next.
