Spoiler Free Review of the Badland Hunters (2024) Movie
The introduction
As we have seen in the Concrete Utopia (2023) film, the world (and Seoul city) has been reduced to rubble by a massive earthquake. Although the extent of the ruins and the cause of the earthquake remain uncertain, there is only a solitary apartment building standing in the centre of Seoul. And the latest Badland Hunters (2024) film takes the story forward.
The storyline
So we know that Seoul has been devastated by an earthquake, reducing everything to debris. The remaining survivors are struggling to survive, battling each other for meagre supplies and necessities. Amidst this chaos, there is only a single doctor Yang Gi-su (Lee Hee-jun) remaining in the city. However, this doctor is not like any other, he is the villain. This antagonist Doctor has turned to the dark side, and his actions are uncontrollable.
In a desperate attempt to continue his experiments, he abducts a teenage girl. In response, a compassionate yet relentless hunter Nam San and his friend Choi Ji-wan (Lee Jun-young) emerge. They are willing to go to any lengths and confront any adversary to ensure her safe return home. So, it has an expected storyline with a satisfactory end to the film.
What do we like in this film?
Its simple storyline is packed with violent action sequences in the film, with too much blood and gore all around. Then there are wild animals, a mad doctor, zombies, super-humans, armed goons, and his army of soldiers. Amidst so much chaos and craziness, the action star Don Lee (Nam San) is much appreciated. He is a tough hunter in the dystopian world, who fights for survival and salvation. We liked his calm and confident presence on the screen.
Don Lee is well supported by other members of the ensemble cast, Lee Hee-jun (Yang Gi-su, the doctor), Jang Young-Nam (a Teacher & a Doctor partner in crime), Lee Jun-young (Choi Ji-wan, Nam’s young friend), Roh Jeong-Eui (Han Su-na, a teen girl), An Ji-hye (Lee Eun-ho, a female soldier and Nam’s friend), etc. Other actors do have not much to do in this action-dominated flick. And we liked its funny dialogue as well as the imaginative actions.
The conclusion
All those who love movies with gore, blood, killing, violence, etc, will certainly lap this time-pass action flick. Despite a few goof-ups, overall, we think it is a mildly entertaining film.
