The introduction

This show states “Blood Runs In The Family” in its tagline. And it is especially true for the family of Gangster operating out of Taiwan.

In the opening scene of the series, the head of a powerful Taiwanese Triad is shot by a mysterious assassin. Soon after, his eldest son, Charles Sun (Justin Chien) rushes to Los Angeles to safeguard his mother, Eileen Sun (Michelle Yeoh), and his naive younger brother, Bruce (Sam Song Li) — who’s been completely sheltered from the truth of his gangster family until now. The Triad and the Sun family have no idea as to who is behind the attacks.

The basic storyline

This family drama explores the complex relationships among the four members of the Sun family. This Triad gangster family includes – the patriarch Big Sun (Johnny Kou), the matriarch Eileen Sun (Michelle Yeoh), the eldest son Charles Sun (Justin Chien) and the youngest son Bruce Sun (Sam Song Li). Each of them has their dreams, aspirations, ambitions and career plans, both within the Triad and outside the Triad system.

An unknown enemy wishes to not only kill and wipe out the Sun family but also the entire leadership of the secretive Triad. Then there are a lot of trauma and complications in the Sun family relationship. So, the basic tale is about the testing of the strength of bonds among all the Sun family members as well as the survival of the fittest, at the end.

What did we like in this Asian American show?

These days, we are watching films and series exploring the content of cross-culture in a modern era. And we loved this new cinematic development. Not so long ago, we had written about American movies like – Past Lives, Joy Ride, Quiz Lady, etc. which delve into their Asian roots too. This is the reality of the shrinking world and connected lives.

In addition, we liked the interesting soundtrack of this American show that gives us Asian vibes. We enjoyed its Theme and Hong Kong singer Betty Chung’s version of Bang Bang.

Cool Michelle Yeoh leads the pack of the talented ensemble cast in this show. Its creators claim that she is one badass mother. But, we think, that she is a typical Asian Ma, who does not even hesitate to slap her grown-up sons when they make mistakes. We loved Michelle in it, however, we wish its creators to explore her character in greater depth in future.

Along with Michelle, most of them have entertained us with their comedic and action timing. The well-choreographed action sequences with a touch of Asian martial arts are pulsating and high-octane. But sometimes, the violence was too graphic for our taste, especially the Chairlegs’ scenes. Maybe the wider audience likes this kind of stuff.

The conclusion

This tale with its action and humourous touches entertained us. So, it was a perfect show for the marathon watch on the weekend.

We liked The Brothers Sun series. Now waiting for its second season two.

The ending of The Brothers Sun (S1/2024) Series is explained in detail.

Background about the Mama Sun (Michelle Yeoh) or Eileen Sun

In the series, one of the key characters “Blood Boots” revealed that Mama Sun (Michelle Yeoh) or Eileen Sun was the real brains behind the Jade Dragons. He also disclosed that Eileen agreed to take Bruce and her Rolodex of information with her to America to protect her husband’s leadership position amongst the triads.

Before dying, he reiterated that Mama Sur always wished and deserved much more from the Triad.

So, what happened in the finale of the first season?

After spending a lot of time in the faraway land of America, Mama Sun has had enough. So, Mama Sun took steps to unify her family which was torn apart by patriarch Big Sun (Johnny Kou) in the last 15 years. Meanwhile, we learn that Big Sun only wishes to protect his crime family – Traid.

In the season finale, with Big Sun out of the picture (for now), all of the Sun family members “have a new respect for each other” at the end of the season, said Brad Falchuk. Mama Sun and her sons Charles (Justin Chien) and Bruce Sun (Sam Song Li) decide to pursue their dreams and aspirations. So, they collectively step out of Big Sun’s shadow to redefine what family means. For once in their lives, they choose their path — to each other.

This is a fractured family story about picking each other back up and bringing love back together into the family. Everyone actually achieved something.

What happened with the three members of the Sun family?

In one of the closing scenes, we see the following developments:

  • Mama Sun is free to fly off on a private jet, ready to take her place as the Dragon Head amongst the triad gangs in Taiwan.
  • Charles Sun opens the bakery of his dreams and perfects his churro recipe. However, he chooses to fly back with his mother to Taiwan, in an attempt to reconnect with her and support her claim to the leadership position of Triad. In a way, he was going to provide muscle power to his mother’s brain power.
  • Bruce Sun drives away from the tarmac in his lime-green Lamborghini. He has realized one of his dreams.

What is the road ahead for the members of the Sun family?

In the post-credit scene, we find out that Big Sun’s No. 2, Yuan, plotting his next move. It seems Yuan wants to serve his master Big Sun’s interests in the Triad.

Wu and Falchuk wanted to end the season on a positive note, while also making sure that the audience knows that this isn’t the end of the story for the Suns.

The end of the season is a happy moment for the family, but when you’re living as a gangster, you can never truly relax. And Big Sun is not an enemy that accepts defeat easily.
